Calumma ratnasariae is one of the new species of chameleons we named in February. It’s a rather rare species, restricted to a small area in northern Madagascar. The three #newspecies of chameleon we described today, Calumma ratnasariae (pictured), C. tjiasmantoi, and C. eliminate, all face an uncertain fate: their forests in Madagascar are being burned and chopped down to make way for subsistence agriculture that is barely keeping the populous of Madagascar alive. This wildlife crisis is a humanitarian crisis too, and right now neither crisis is being adequately addressed. Naming species is a necessary first step toward our hope of knowing what there is to save, and coordinating efforts to protect it. A male Calumma gehringi stalking through the foliage in northern Madagascar. My colleagues and I described this species back in 2017, and to me it is the most beautiful member of the Calumma nasutum species group. Look at that gorgeous orange and green colouration!
