Bhutan festivals, known locally as Tshechus, are among the most vibrant and spiritually significant celebrations in the Himalayan kingdom. Each Bhutan festival is a unique blend of sacred masked dances, ancient rituals, colorful traditional attire, and deep-rooted Buddhist symbolism.
Held in monasteries and dzongs across the country, from Paro Tshechu to Thimphu Tshechu, these festivals offer a rare glimpse into Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage and spiritual depth. Locals gather in large numbers dressed in their finest clothes to receive blessings, watch mystical Cham dances, and reconnect with their communities.
Whether you're a cultural traveler, photographer, or spiritual seeker, attending a Bhutan festival is an unforgettable experience. It’s not just an event — it’s a living tradition that brings Bhutan’s philosophy of Gross National Happiness to life.
It is a famous carnival celebrated in Sikkim in which Cham Dance is the prime attraction. It is celebrated towards the end of the year, in December.
#Repost @_knowledgeoftheworld_ with @instarepost2016 ・・・ The cham dance : Tibetan devil dance. The cham dance (Tibetan: འཆམ་, Wylie: 'cham) is a lively masked and costumed dance associated with some sects of Tibetan Buddhism and Buddhist festivals. The dance is accompanied by music played by monks using traditional Tibetan musical instruments. The dances often offer moral instruction relating to karuṇā (compassion) for sentient beings and are held to bring merit to all who perceive them. Chams are considered a form of meditation and an offering to the gods. The leader of the cham is typically a musician, keeping time using some percussion instrument like cymbals, the one exception being Dramyin Cham, where time is kept using dramyin. The term "devil dance" was an early 20th century Western description of the performance; its name was derived from the costumes worn by performers. Chams often depict incidents from the life of Padmasambhava, the 9th century Nyingmapa teacher, and other saints. One iteration of this dance is performed on the eve of Losar, the Tibetan new year, to commemorate the assassination of the cruel Tibetan king, Langdarma in 841 CE. It is a dance symbolising the victory of good over evil #chamdance #cham #chamart #tibet #tibetandance #tibetanbuddhism #tibetanmonk #musicians #devildance #padmasambhava #langdarma #losar Happy Tibetan New Year! 🙌🙌🎊 Dance the Devil Dance!!!
