Kai ignores the searing pain still irritating his skin. He lets out an exasperated, scandalized groan as he spreads his arms. “Are you crazy? The Fire Devil, whatever it is, is still a Devil! Summoning it under a closed surrounding, we die! Weren’t you thinking?!”

The young man has the decency to look embarrassed. “I want to evaluate how useful you are to the team. We’re stable; I wonder how we’d function with you and your sister on the team.”

The brown-haired man scoffs, rolling his eyes. “Even you don’t look stable to me. I have no idea how you’d even get a position like a leader when the only thing you want to see is how powerful the Fire Devil is. Don’t you have a responsibility?”

A second after he utters that last word, his face is pressed against the window’s glass, seeing his reflection and Cole’s, who has a slightly tense face, and, down below, the authorities still mulling about, not knowing that the threat — a useless one, in fact — was already nullified. Heat pools inside of Kai’s stomach at the sheer thought of letting someone — much less a stranger he has ill opinions about — touch him like this. He tries to fight back, moving his hands, but Cole, while shorter, was bigger, immediately restraining his hands. Unhelpfully, Kai notes Cole’s golden eyes, glimmering so brightly in the sun like a mirror. He shouldn’t be complimenting him so well.

“Tell me, what’s your motivation to become a Devil Hunter?” Cole inquires, voice low, his breath tickling Kai’s ears. Before he could answer, to his displeasure, the older man answers for him. “Because your sister was taken here, to become a Devil Hunter herself, after it has been explicitly stated that she’s a Devil.”

“She’s not a Devil.” How many times has he told him?

“Because you don’t see her as one.”

He scoffs, smirking as he looks down at the policemen below. “Oh yeah? If my motivation to protect my sister from you guys trying to experiment on her like she’s a mole is shit, what about yours, huh? Oh wait, I think I know your motivation.”

He narrows his eyes at the red-eyed boy suspiciously.

That silence was enough for Kai to start his not-so-far-of-a-reach assumption about Cole. “Your family got shanked by Devils. That’s why you’re currently in the business. Searching for your family’s murderer.”

Cole’s face is unchanged, but there is a certain stone-faced stoicness currently replacing his irritated composure.

“Judging by that face. I guess I am right.”
