It always came up because I generally was the most outspoken Jew in all my classes and didn't back down. Often things would get off topic because someone would make a joke about something super racist or sexist or whatever, and then it would turn on my Jewishness and why I was wrong.
Oh, I see. Yeah, when I was in school I was pretty quiet about my Jewishness, especially during the Holocaust unit. People would always make antisemitic comments and I didn’t want to “out” myself as a Jew and possibly be targeted.
People would also make antisemitic jokes and comments in my German class, and the teacher would never say anything, so at that point I did have to speak out against them. There was only one person who backed me up.
But it’s definitely intimidating being the only Jew in your class or even the entire school.
