“our winner this week is chae with pporappippam!,” one of the hosts, nova, cheers as they all erupt into smiles as the confetti falls. chae can’t help but break into a huge smile herself as she’s ushered forward and handed her trophy.

she always felt the same sense of joy when she got a win. of course, she’s calmed down a lot (she still remembered how hard she cried when she got her first win which, now looking back on it, was frankly kind of embarrassing), but the same sense of pride was always there.

“thank you so much!” she said quietly to the hosts, bowing politely before bringing the mic to her lips.

“thank you all so much as well!” she exclaimed, louder this time, and threw an arm up in the direction of the audience. “couldn’t have done it without you! i was nervous about this song, for real! it was a new sound for me and i wasn’t sure if people were gonna like it, but they did!”

“before i ramble on for too long,” she giggled, still smiling excitedly, “thank you nova, leo, and jiyoung for being amazing hosts- seriously, have you guys seen them? they make the stage brighter. and of course, thank you renace! i’m honoured to have gotten to share the stage with you! if i had control of this, i would’ve rigged it to let you guys win, seriously. but not really, rigging isn’t fair, but i’d make sure they won one way or another.”

she giggled again before continuing, with her arm holding her trophy high up in the air, “thank you again! i promise i won’t disappoint!” she exclaimed before the first bites of her song started playing, signalling the encore stage.

PURPLE NIGHT is a mini album by solo artist CHAE released by SMKE on september 10, 2020. the mini album, which is available digitally and physically, contains four tracks, purple night acting as the title. the song got three music show wins in total, while it was promoted from september 10 to october 1.

she made her official debut in 2013, when she was only 16.

technically, her career started long before that though, it started in 2010 when she began posting song covers onto youtube. starmaker entertainment contacted her and in 2011 she had a contract.

all her songs have been self written. she has had a few people help her produce them before.

she’s still active on her personal youtube channel, currently under the name “wonnie productions” where she posts vlogs, makeup tutorials, and still song covers occasionally. most of her old covers prior to debut have been made private.

she’s always had a love for singing, but never envisioned herself becoming an idol.

chaewon definitely didn’t expect those to be her first words of the day. the first thing she did that morning was go downstairs to throw some garbage away, and she came back to find her door cracked open and one cat instead of two. mack slept in her bed, undisturbed, while mick was nowhere to be found. chaewon knew how her cats, more specifically mick, had the tendency to run away whenever they got the chance, and so by that logic, mick was definitely out the door and roaming around the hallway somewhere.

she must’ve not closed the door all the way, that was her first thought. figuring out how mick got out was the easy part, actually finding mick was the hard part.

“it’s too early for this shit,” chaewon sighed, and looked over at mack, who was still laying in her bed. her eyes were open now and she was staring at chaewon.

chaewon pointed a finger at mack, “you stay there.” then she was off, out her door and into the hallway. she hadn’t even gotten the chance to get dressed, so she looked ridiculous, in her worn out polka dot pajama pants and a gray t-shirt about five sizes too big. however, she had better things to worry about, like getting her damn cat back.

thankfully, no one was in the hallway. it was about nine in the morning, so anyone in the building that had something to do that day had already left. the building she lived in was owned by smk ent, and they used it to house all of their idols, so she was never really disturbed that much.

she stared down the hallway of closed doors. where could he have possibly gone?

“mick?” she called, like that would do anything anyway. most cats that she’d met, including her own, didn’t respond to their names. “where in the world did you-?”

another door down the hall a little was cracked open slightly.

CHAE (채) also known by her birth name ahn chaewon (안채 원) was the first solo artist to ever debut under smk entertainment. her concept has stayed fairly consistent since debut, but in terms of music genre, she’s ventured off from the retro/city pop style she had previously and is now doing more rnb and hip-hop inspired work, but her style is constantly changing. she’s also well know for being one of the first kpop idols to come out as lesbian.
