in which, chae and bee are right where they belong.
“hmm?” bee hummed, glancing down at her girlfriend- eyes closed and her arms sprawled out in different directions, in her lap.
“i didn’t say anything,” chaewon replied, opening her eyes and looking up at bee. they were laying- or technically, it was just chaewon laying, on the fire escape between two floors of their dorm building. bee was always too scared to lay down when they went up there, so she instead sat with her back pressed up against the wall of the building, with chaewon sprawled out on her lap, her legs dangling freely into the brisk late night air.
“no i know you didn’t say anything,” bee replied simply, “but you’re thinking.”
“i’m always thinking,” chaewon replied like they had this conversation every day, “my mind is like that. ‘s why you love me.” she rolled over so instead her cheek rested on bee’s thigh, immediately noticing the floral smell of the laundry detergent she always used on her baggy jeans. bee flinched, obviously concerned that chaewon would roll right off the side of the fire escape as an unexpected surprise to oncoming traffic.
but she didn’t, and bee didn’t say anything, because they did this almost every night.
“hm, i guess so,” bee replied, absentmindedly running her hand through chaewon’s hair, bringing her back down to earth. “come back, wherever you are,” she whispered.
wherever it was chaewon belonged, right now it was here. and that was more than enough.
the cold night air nipped at their skin, probably causing them both to think about some other place they could hang out alone at night without having to worry about the brisk air and the goosebumps that rose on their arms with it. chaewon’s dorm was boring, they hung out there a lot, a change of scenery would be more ideal. once in a while, they hung out at the company cafe on the days when it wasn’t opened up the public. however, that didn’t provide much privacy, the floor to ceiling windows meant anyone who was passing by could easily see them. it wasn’t private enough, they liked being alone, just themselves without another care in the world.
they were similar like that, one of the only things the couple seemed to agree on, besides trivial little things, like which of their four favourite restaurants they’d eat at that night, or what colour jewelry would go best with whatever outfit either of them wore that day. although, their differences seemed to bring them even closer each time.
chaewon was pretty sure they were soulmates. she’d never met someone so different, yet so similar to her, it was almost fascinating. just like bee herself, she’d always seemed like such a whimsical person to chaewon, she often compared her to a mysterious little forrest fairy, which, bee took as a compliment.
“bee?” chaewon suddenly piped up.
“yeah?” she answered, looking down at her girlfriend in her lap once again, a soft smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
“do you believe in soulmates?”
bee blinked. “platonic or romantic?”
“either,” chaewon replied simply.
bee appeared to think for a second, before replying, “i think it’s an adorable concept, so i guess so because i’d like it to be real.”
“me too,” chaewon replied, looking up. not at bee exactly, but at the sky just above her, it was cloudy, so there weren’t many stars, but she could faintly see the pale glow of the moon where the clouds were thinner. “i think you’re my soulmate.”
bee seemed taken aback for just a second, but it wasn’t long before she broke out into that huge dorky smile that chaewon loved so dearly. “you really think so?”
“mhm,” chaewon replied, so surely you’d think she’d been thinking about it for years. and knowing her, she probably had been. since the day they met.
bee hummed, staring past chaewon and down at the buildings across the street and the cars rushing by below, ignoring the sinking feeling in her stomach probably caused by being suspended several stories up in the air. but she was used to it by now, and it was overpowered by the warmness in her heart by simply being with chaewon. they saw each other every day if they could, yet bee still felt the same overwhelming adoration every time she saw the shorter girl.
“i think so too.”
