Food I Ate This Month Part 2~~ :D
Chaan recently revamped their afternoon tea so I went with some friends a weeks ago for their Tamatebako Afternoon Tea. You have to reserve your spot in advance and right now it’s limited to 20 spots on Saturdays but for $48 a person, it’s a pretty good deal and one of those afternoon teas that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg in NYC for great service. What’s nice is that you get to bypass the regular floor of Chaan and go up to the third floor (which I believe is normally reserved for private events) so it’s definitely more of an intimate, cozy setting overall.
They start you off with the savory set of smoked salmon, egg salad, and inari (w/multi-grain sushi rice and tomatoes. For the desserts, they serve them in these fun jewelry-box like compartments divided by three tiers. The first layer had a mini-matcha cake, mini mont blanc & creme puff, the second layer had a yuzu daifuku, warabi mochi & mini anmitsu (shiratama, strawberry, hoji agar, red bean paste, & brown syrup) and the third layer had a tea cookie selection. They also give you a choice of pot for tea with either the hoji or matcha flavor you can also order additional drinks so I got their iced matcha latte while my friends got the iced peach tea! Overall, Chaan’s Tamatebako Afternoon Tea is definitely one of my favorite afternoon tea services and I really hope they keep up with it in the future so it becomes a permanent fixture at the teahouse!

For my birthday last month I booked the private room at Cha-an since I wanted to try their afternoon tea. Among the tea sandwiches I liked the salmon and egg sandwich flavors, and among the desserts, I tried the mochi and the strawberry daifuku the best. I also got a premium iced matcha latte which was great.

Finally got around to visiting Cha-an new’s takeaway storefront location, Cha-an BonBon which literally just down the street from the original teahouse location. They have a variety of different Japanese wagashi confections, but specialize in dango, so I tried a bunch of different dango flavors that were delightful but the real highlight was their matcha soft serve which was absolutely scrumptious and tasted as delicious as it looked!
