Falling Snow of Reminiscence.
It’s difficult for me to articulate my feelings for the death of the Going Merry without getting deep into my real world job and experience, and I think that’s true for a lot of people. Oda wrings every bit of emotion out of this scene by writing it with 100% sincerity. The Merry isn’t just a ship, it’s a part of the crew, and her funeral is treated with the same respect that would have been to any other member of the Straw Hat Pirates.
And that’s the whole appeal of One Piece, isn’t it? No matter how goofy or serious things get, Oda never loses that earnestness, so his fans end up crying over a boat.
This mini flashback is probably my favorite Iceburg scene, and a brilliant way of explaining how the Merry made it to Enies Lobby. It balances in-universe logic with something more mystic and profound. Just a really powerful moment all around.
