When I wrote my post about "Thief," I thought it would be the only short film that I documented this year, but Over the Moon reminded me of "One Small Step" because it is also about a young woman, Luna Chu, going to the moon after losing a parent. Aside from being only seven minutes long, "One Small Step" is different from Over the Moon in that is almost entirely montage. Basically, imagine Over the Moon's first song, but if it was the entire movie.
Like that song, "One Small Step" does a great job of showing a parent's dedication to their child. I didn't mention this in my review of Over the Moon, but I love the moment when Fei Fei's mother is showing her how to make mooncakes because these actions are so filled with love and this is her way of connecting to her child. In "One Small Step," we see over and over how Luna's father mends her shoes, makes her dinner, and quietly supports her even as she becomes engrossed in her astrophysics studies, ultimately neglecting her relationship with him. Also like in Over the Moon, we also see details of his aging and deterioration. He begins to use a cane, he moves more slowly, and he massages his wrists, indicating he has arthritis. But still he gives everything to her.
My favorite scene, though, is the one in which the take an imaginary trip to the moon when she's a little girl. I love how the animation blurs the line between reality and imagination by showing them rocket through space in a cardboard ship, with cardboard helmets, and stars hanging on strings. Between this and the concept that "children are gay and innocent and heartless," it actually reminds me a lot of Peter Pan.
Ultimately, like Peter Pan, I think this film speaks a lot to being a parent, and how much parents put in to their children, and how much children take of granted. Where Over the Moon centers on grief and finding a way through it, "One Small Step" centers on how the love of the person who has died can be what propels us forward. In the end, I feel that Luna's determination to become an astronaut and her success was still a way of honoring her father because he had put so much of himself into her, and giving up would have been disrespectful of his memory. I think, in a way, Big Hero 6 also tries to do this--with Hiro pursuing the life Tadashi wanted for him--but I think "One Small Step" does it better.
Finally, this movie also makes me think of the importance of taking time to be with family. I mean, I could throw myself into this animation project that I'm weeks behind on. But what personal connections might I be sacrificing to do so? I think it's time to take a break.
Oh yeah. This is nothing of consequence, but Luna has a mole under her eye. Like Lieutenant Ross. And on that note, tomorrow we cap off Fullmetal Alchemist and close the gate once and for all.
