These are Chromosomes - made from the DNA of mom and dad. There are 23 pairs of chromosomes that make up the human genome, the 23rd determines male or female. As a cell splits during fertilization, the chromosomes split with them sending one copy of each DNA strand to the opposite side. #celldivision #chromosomes #dna #histones #medicalanimation #scientificanimation #biology #biotech #biotechnology #pharma #science #sciart #scicomm #viscom #singlecell #animation #medicalillustration #scientificillustration #cells #mitosis #daughtercells #meiosis #binaryfission #newyorkcity #northjersey #boston #eastcoast (at San Francisco, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2wW35tANCC/?igshid=1hkba18mo7kr

Did you hear about the cells that got sent off to war after mitosis?
It’s hard to believe they got diploid.
I'm pretty sure this feline cell is in the late anaphase and will soon divide into two separate feline cells! New way to target some rapidly dividing cancer cells, leaving healthy cells unharmed #Cancer #CellDivision “A summary of the scientists' findings are published Sept. 9 in Nature. "Some of the most widely used cancer drugs already kill rapidly dividing cells," says Andrew Holland, Ph.D., associate professor of molecular biology and genetics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "However, most of these drugs have notable drawbacks, including killing healthy cells, such as fast-multiplying bone marrow cells, along with the cancer cells." Holland, whose research focuses on mammalian—including human—cell division also notes that unchecked mistakes in cell division can fuel genetic errors that, in some cases, go on to develop into cancer cells. During their search, he says, they came across a line of human breast cancer cells that are very dependent on cell structures called centrioles to divide and survive. Centrioles act as the structural core of centrosomes, which organize thin tubes of proteins that give cells their shape and help separate DNA when the cell divides. However, many cells can divide without centrioles and centrosomes.” https://www.instagram.com/p/CE7yXWwpxG_/?igshid=qlh7szgi5136
