I’m realizing that it is very easy for me to forgive a fictional character for a good many things, or at least overlook them (because they’re fictional), but there are a couple things I will not forgive any character for.
1. Being a pervert or sexual predator (I’m looking at you, Mineta)
2. Being annoying or actively convoluting the plot (I hate Lila Rossi with a burning passion. While we’re on the topic, throw Chloe in there too, though she’s not as bad as Lila)
3. Being a terrible and/or neglectful parental figure (Odalia)
4. Being actively mean or aggressive towards children and/or animals (Overhaul deserves way more pain than he got for what he did to Eri. Also Cruella gets a pass because she never actually does anything (on-screen) because the puppies get away, and is generally cartoonishly evil and entertaining instead of scary.)
As long as a character doesn’t commit one or more of these 4 things, I am willing to give them a second chance, or at least enjoy them as a character if redemption is definitely not on the table. Maleficent isn’t going to turn over a new leaf anytime soon (especially since she’s dead).
THAT DOES NOT MEAN I CONDONE THE THINGS OTHER CHARACTERS DO IN REAL LIFE! Just because I didn’t put murder on here doesn’t mean I think it’s ok.
For example, a hot topic these days is Jax. (No, I’m still not over this show. Yes, I will probably bring it up again. I don’t know when it will stop. Just be patient.) Jax is an asshole, full stop. Does she have a traumatic backstory? Yes. Did she possibly accidentally murder her mother, as far as she’s aware? Yes, and that would in fact be a crime. Did she deal with this in a healthy and mature way? HELL NO! She caused 2 of her closest friends to abstract, pushed away anyone who ever tried to get close, never reached out when she needed help (she got very close right before she abstracted), and took out her frustration and anger on the people around her, primarily Gangle. And again, I DO NOT CONDONE THESE ACTIONS. However, I think that all these things together make for an extremely narratively interesting and fun to watch character, and I honestly just feel bad for her, even though everything that happens after she joins the circus is completely her fault. I feel bad for her because I see why she did what she did, and every time she deflects or lashes out or pushes the people who care for her away, I see a point where she could have stopped her downward spiral. And she only accepts help when it’s too late. Jax’s story is a tragic one, because it’s entirely her own doing. And I love it.
Also she’s trans and purple.
