I really tried to keep my cool in line and had a whole monologue prepared for Scott but all I got out was "THANK YOU"
I was really excited for Comedy Bang Bang live in Denver
I am ready. #cbblive (at Skirball Center for the Performing Arts)
I donāt know if Iāve ever laughed as hard as I did last night at Comedy Bang Bang live in Toronto. If you follow me on Twitter, youāll know how excited I was for this show AND my longtime friend Mara came to visit me and see the show with me, which made it all the more special and exciting. Paul F. Tompkins and Scott Aukerman are just comedic wizards, and their respective podcasts have genuinely helped me get through some emotional shit. Comedy has been my way of coping with difficult times in my life and when I discovered Comedy Bang Bang in 2011, it was kind of an ideal time because things in my life were pretty hairy. So the show itself was incredible and Iām so happy I got to witness my two favourite podcasters live. I need to add that the Birthday Boys - a Bob Odenkirk discovery and a bunch of cutie patootie young comedians - were so great and if I wasnāt already crushinā on Mike Hanford after seeing him as Ducky Powell on CBB, I definitely am after seeing him being hilarious while buck-ass naked on stage. Scott Aukerman did the prepared thing heās been doing to warm up the audience prior to the actual podcast, and although Iād seen snippets of what itād be all about, I still laughed my face off. There was this part where heād asked us to laugh at appropriate times during the night and while we laughed, he just kept going, āYeah! Like that! Oh, that was a little quieter. Oh yeah! There we go!ā re: the audienceās waves of laughter. It was just a great bit. The guest was a Canadian comedian named Sean Cullen - someone I wasnāt really aware of until last night - and although it was pretty clear he had no idea what CBB was about, he was a good sport with everything. At one point Scott brought up that Sean was friends with the Barenaked Ladies and he very pointedly kept trying him to say āITāS BEENā and the audience was howling with joy. When PFT came out I had a little bit of a head-spinning excited moment because I could not believe that I was getting to see this all in front of my eyeballs. He was doing his new Alan Thicke character (something Iād expected because Canada) and was dressed in a striped suit, reminiscent of Robin Thickeās Beetlejuice MVA suit. There was this whole bit where they were acting out PFT-as-Alan-Thicke pitching a new TV show to the CBC, and Sean Cullen was the super depressed CBC exec, while Scott was the flirty-creepy receptionist. There was this one moment that someone on Instagram took a pic of and I just need to include it right here:
One thing that wonāt come across on the podcast is the hilarious visual humour Scott was doing during that bit, where he was typing and PFT/Sean were laughing about how he was seemingly using a type writer, which made Scott start miming using a computer and using a mouse and I canāt explain how delighted everyone was by it. His total commitment to that side bit while PFT and Sean were in character was wonderful. And then there was Would You Rather, which was wonderful of course, and the guys all stayed frozen during the theme (Sean caught onto that bit pretty quickly). Again, thanks to someone on Instagram for this picture:
Iāve gotta check out of the hotel in a few minutes so Iām racing to wrap this up but the show was so good and I canāt remember the last time I laughed that hard for that long. AND THEN THE MEET-AND-GREET I was shaking and my stomach was doing flips because I was so nervous about meeting two of my comedy idols, but I shouldnāt have even worried because they were so fuckinā NICE Iāve heard theyāre both really good guys and it couldnāt have been more accurate. I introduced myself and asked if they could sign these little CBB cards Iād printed - one for me, one for Mara, who was waiting outside because the line was suuuper long - and they were happy to oblige. I said something along the lines of, āThank you so much for your podcasts, theyāre so terrific and have really made me laugh during some tough times,ā and Scott looked so sincerely grateful. He thanked me really kindly and PFT was just smiling really genuinely
and then I got a picture with them and PFT went in for a handshake but I asked, āUm is it okay if I ask for a hug?ā and he enthusiastically went āOf course!ā and pulled me into this tight hug. Iām a corny fartface but it really was the loveliest hug. I asked Scott if I could hug him too, although it was awkward because he was behind the table on the other side of Paul and he said āYeah! Here, come from behindā and I hugged him super awkwardly around the neck from behind and got caught behind Paulās chair and I was a goofy giggling mess but they were laughing too so it was all fine And then I went around the other side of the table and said āThank you so much again, have a great rest of the tourā and Scott thanked me for coming, and I left the theatre and also I left my body a bit It was so brilliant and fun and Iām happy I got to share it with one of my favourite friends and CANāT STOP SMILING
