like ntbts is rpf the show in the sense that the space in front of the camera is a safe place to act out and test scenarios and fantasies in a way that is both grounded in reality and wildly fantastical and say stupid and crazy and funny things with the safety net of performance around the entire project. And crucially it's all improvised. so whatever matt and jay say of their character counterparts is 1 of 3 things: something they've thought about & discussed and informs any bit that they do, something discovered on the fly that was retrospectively made significant because of how funny or weird or remarkable it was, or just something that comes straight from the soul. damned if it's fake (why did you come up with that while riffing with your best friend?), damned if it's real (you're really airing that on your stupid sitcom where you play a fictionalised version of yourself?)
