So, a big theory is that Master Ash is a Chandrian. I 100% agree with this theory. The most common identity for Master Ash (that I’ve seen) is Bredon. I think this fits very well, but for the sake of my crazy ramblings, lets say its not Bredon. Who then?

Caudicus. For four reasons.

1. He’s a proven bad guy. Admittedly not very solid evidence, but a lot of people say Bredon is too nice to be a Chandrian. (I disagree).

2. The Maer said that Caudicus “cured” him for a while the previous year, and was free to go gallavanting around. This fits almost perfectly with The Wedding.

3. Motive. There is still no logical explanation why Caudicus would betray the Maer, and keep him alive, like he did, unless he wasn’t really an archanist. But if he was a Chandrian, the poisoning could have gone hand in hand with the Cinder-lead-bandits plan.

4. Denna’s Song. Denna says her patron (Master Ash) has her researching genealogies and histories for her song (which paints the Chandrian in a good light). Caudicus is described as especially interested in histories. 

Personally, I still see Bredon as the better fit, but this crazed theory occurred to me, and I had to share. 

Seriously, I've been puzzling over this for a long time, and I can't come up with any answer.

If he had an arcanist's dream job, then I'm guessing it was an external motive, and Caudicus was being paid to poison the Maer.

But by who? and why?
