Marmorerpeton wakei was an early salamander that lived during the mid-Jurassic, about 166 million years ago, in coastal lakes and rivers covering what is now the Isle of Skye, Scotland.
Growing to around 40cm long (~1'4"), it had a wide shallow skull with strong jaws similar to those of modern giant salamanders, suggesting it had a convergently similar sort of sit-and-wait ambush predator lifestyle – using suction feeding to pull prey into its mouth, then powerful bites to subdue it.
Although its body was fairly robustly built its anatomy was somewhat neotenic, retaining some late-stage larval features and staying fully aquatic into adulthood.

How can I attract and see more salamanders? One got into our house this year (live partway in a hill) and my mom squished it accidentally. I don't know we had salamanders before that, but the one is a apparently common var.
But I definitely want to attract more salamanders. They are very cool
Woodpiles. Don't rake. Small ponds or other water features. More trees. Piles of large, flatish rocks with nice gaps in between. Moss. Salamanders will come if the habitat suits them and the connectivity is okay. You can work to make that happen.
Image ID: Two hellbender salamanders. One of the flat wrinkly idiots is eating the other's face. The one being eaten seems unconcerned with this. With their heads interlocked in the middle of the page and their paddle tails spiraling away from them, they look like a big tan letter S.
A salamander I saw a few weeks ago while on vacation. I didn’t even notice it before I nudged it with my hand, which either means that its camouflage was really good, or that I’m not very observant.

Hello!! I made this side blog for my household’s two Tiger salamanders, Smoliv (right) and Delilah (left). They are delightful creatures and I very much enjoy having them. More info under the cut!
Smoliv and Delilah are sisters from the same clutch. I’m calling them tiger salamanders here, but they are actually hybrids between a tiger sal and an axolotl that were bred to be fish bait. It’s very unethical to hybridize salamanders and in particular axolotls with terrestrial salamanders as axolotls are fully aquatic and neotenic, and have a very different lifestyle than salamanders that morph after their larval stage. Axolotls also tend to have a lot of problems if they DO morph, such as failing to eat and thrive.
Smoliv and Delilah did morph and are terrestrial critters. Thankfully they are both good eaters and they seem to be growing well. I’m told they may not live as long as normal tiger salamanders (10+ years) or get as big (11-12in!!) but I’m going to take care of them as best I can!
