Itâs midnight, the whole city is asleep. Nothing but silence can be heard. The cacophony of the busy streets has died down. Everyone rests at their home, replenishing their tired bodies, dreaming of a far away land. The streets are empty. Not a living body in sight but, deep down in a small alley, lingers a black cat whose yellow eyes glow in the distant darkness. This was his abode. He would scour the city by day looking for food but at the end of it, this is where he would always return.
One night, as the cat was about to return to the alley, he was surprised to see someone there. It was an old homeless man who was seemingly sleeping. The cat didnât want to bother the man so he took walk in the streets instead.
The homeless man, Bob, was at his lowest point in life. He was a drunkard, who abandoned his family when he lost his job. He had nothing and no one left in his life. Bob didnât see the point of living anymore. âAt midnightâ he said âAt midnight, everything will finally end. All this pain and loneliness will be gone forever. For I too will be gone foreverâ This was the night Bob planned to take his life away. A few hours before midnight, he began to search for his final resting place. After hours of searching, Bob finally found it, a small alley, a good enough place where no one would find him.
As midnight approached, Bob was reflecting on his last few moments on earth. âThis is itâ he said âGoodbye Worldâ As he pointed the gun on his head and was about to pull the trigger he heard something. Bob thought he was all alone but apparently he wasnât. He heard the serene purrs of a cat. A voice in Bobâs head was telling him to follow those purrs and so he did.
At the end of the street, he saw this cat sitting, staring at something above. Thatâs when Bob saw what it was staring at, the moon. The fullness and brightness of it was captivating. As Bob gazed upon it something in him changed. He suddenly remembered how he and his children would stare at the moon before he tucked them into bed every night. âWhatever happened to nights like that?â Bob thought. He suddenly had an epiphany about the beauty of life and the precious moments he had with his children that he all threw away. At that moment, Bob put the gun down and after months of sobbing he finally smiled then he said âMaybe it isnât too late to changeâ. Then he sat next to the cat and gazed at the beauty of the moon.
Bob almost took his life away that night but in the end he didnât. He finally realized the beauty of life and that it isnât too late to change. He was one step away from pulling the trigger but in the end he didnât, all because of a cat staring at the moon.
