I mean I do think we should maybe contend with the fact that she grew up experiencing an immense amount of white privilege, and I think unlearning all that was too hard for her and she, like a lot of white people, is enjoying the right-wing cultural shift in that it means she doesn’t have to try anymore. I feel like it's very important to contextualise Malala's identity as an Activist in the Western media-scape, especially when people start comparing her to Greta Thunberg. The West did not care about Malala or her activism until she got shot, and after that they very much used her a poster-child illustrating the dangers of Islamic extremism -- which is the West is Islam as a whole. I imagine it's a hell of a thing be shot at 15 and then all of a sudden you're meeting all these heads of state and doing interviews and there's always cameras and the framing is always "Look at this a Good Muslim Little Girl, she is a rare precious jem we the West must protect from the Bad Scary Muslim Men." It's notable that the context of her father's own activism with regards to women's rights and education were and are often skimmed over. She gets criticised for not being Westernised enough, but she also gets criticised for not being Pakistani enough or Muslim enough, but that was a condition actively created and forced on her.
