hello, um!! sorry to bother you but i just wanted to ask you what it's like being a translator and maybe how you knew it's what you wanted to do? im a junior in high school right now and there's a lot of pressure to decide on a career and i've been taking french for maybe like 5 years and i like it a lot but i dont know how good i am at it and if it's something i want to do with the rest of my life. aah thank you for your time though!!
Sorry this took me so long to answer, catalyticthulhu! I meant to do so yesterday then - forgot. Oops.
Honestly, I like it a lot - at one point translating becomes sort of a second nature, but it’s never the same - unless you’re working in a big company that always puts you on the same contracts, you’ll learn tons of stuff about so many different things you never ever thought you’re learn about just to be able to translate them right. ;) It’s exhausting and very mentally draining work - you’re basically taking a text apart, making sure you understand everything, and rebuilding it in another language, it’s like doing puzzles all day long - and your work is rarely recognized, but if you love languages and writing and words and reading, it’s worth it. :)
Interpreting is different - it’s more stressful and imo a lot harder, but there are specialized classes and training for that and it’s also a lot of fun when you get the hang of it!
Honestly, if your first language is English that’s probably the language you’d translate to. If you learn French well enough to understand it perfectly - and you’ll always have tools to help you - you should be fine on that front!
As for me - it was kind of a happy accident. I studied international relations and politics and then, as work in that field was hard, I stumbled upon the idea of tranlation - er, long story short, a professor encouraged me - and I loved it after the first semester. :) I was also lucky to be living in a place where translation is very important, and college isn’t as expensive as in the US.
