Had a silly thought about hypothetical cat curse shenanigans with @dark-lord-of-awesomeness's How to Cat Burglar a Family ;)

FOUND IT! Whew! I've been looking through my cat list and kept getting distracted, but a similar question has been asked before, and somewhere out there there's also a fic about it.

Basically no, not as long as Ford knows this cats Stan or becomes attached post Stan's disappearance. At that point the whole family's going through it in one form or another, and no ones gonna make Ford get rid of the one thing he's relying on to keep him stable, unless it goes on too long with Ford insisting the cats Stan. In which case I could see Filbrick trying to throw him out and chase him off so Ford can 'man up' about losing his twin brother. No use in selling a cat after all, there a dime a dozen out in the streets.

The really interesting thing would be if Filbrick saw it happen. Like if Stan was helping around the shop, touched something he shouldn't have (maybe intended for Filbrick?) And Filbrick watches his teen son get zapped into a cat. Because on one hand, Stan was for sure playing a prank! That miscreant, always causing trouble.

Except there's no Stan reappearing, the cats freaking out and looking at him with desperate eyes, and once it calms down it reacts like a person.

At that point i can't really imagine what Filbrick would do, but I think the simultaneously hilarious and heart breaking answer is that he just. Doesn't tell anyone, and now has a new son cat. Like. This is his son Stan, who is also a cat, but he not only has no idea how to fix that, he has no idea how to process it either, so he just closes up shop, goes upstairs holding this cat, and sits on the couch and stares at the wall while Stan's pawing at him. Wife and other son come home, ask about the cat flopped in his lap, and what's he supposed to say? Prank gone too far? There's no sign of Stanley! Stanley? If they see him calling this cat their son they'll think he's lost it!

So he just says cat and leaves it at that. The cat yowls in protest. He pats its face like a snooze button.

That works, but it gives him a Look and runs off to bother it's human brother.

This plan of not acknowledging the problem and hoping it sorts itself out lasts maybe a day before Ford starts worrying about his missing brother. His missing brother the cat. The missing brother Filbrick cannot tell anyone is the cat, or they'll cart him off to the loony bin.

Solution?

He just needs to find Stan and put this whole thing behind him. Wring his youngests neck for making his ma worry and making Filbrick think he actually turned into a cat.

But also still sorta treats this cat like it's Stan. Just in case. Everyone thinks Filbricks lost it from heartbreak over his missing son, gruffly telling the cat to knock it off whenever it gets rowdy, letting it eat at the table as long as it has manners, making it sit in with Ford while he does homework. Let's the cat get away with way too much for a man like him. But also is the lead man in trying to find Stan. Filbrick cannot let magic be real, it messes with the foundation of himself.

Stan would be touched his pa cared, if he also didn't over hear him mutter under his breath about having to find Stan so he knows for sure he's not the cat. Stan knows Filbrick knows he's a cat and is angry he's saying nothing on the subject. Is bothering his pa so much while also erupting into purrs whenever Filbrick so much as pats his side for whatever reason because 'oh my God positive attention from my pa' feeling is like drugs to him.

Caryn and Ford are in a tragedy about their missing son/brother, Filbricks in a comedy of trying to solve the case of his missing son whose right there. He busts so much other crime to try and prove to himself he didn't see Stan turn into a cat, while Stan the cat flip flops between consoling his depressed bro and trying to smack sense into his pa while also helping him solve crimes because what else is he supposed to do? Go to school? Hang out at home all day listening to his ma cry? Spy on ford as he also doesn't go to school?

Better to waste his time trying to make sure the one guy who actually knows he's a cat doesn't snuff it proving he's not a cat.

Funniest end to me is that Ford almost gets himself killed following a lead solo, they have a family intervention about it, yell a bunch, Ford screaming about how Filbrick only cared about Stan when Stan went missing and a whole bunch of family drama, and then suddenly Stan poofs back into being between them, wide eyed and making the table he was sitting on to yowl at people break under his weight.

The reunion is beautiful right up until Stan and Filbrick lock eyes (or maybe not, hard to tell under the glasses), and Stan starts yelling about how Filbrick knew he was the cat the whole time, and Filbrick starts yelling about no! He didn't! Because magic isn't real!

Except everyone did see the cat turn into Stan there. Magic is real, and Filbrick denying it almost got Ford killed looking for his twin that was at their house as a cat the whole time. Whats Filbrick gonna do about it? Yell that they're crazy? Stan knows things only the cat knew, and there's no sign of the cat, they all saw him transform from the cat!

Filbrick sleeps on the couch that night. Might even miss Stan the cat. Is definitely a person who prefers his son as a cat more than a person.
