Rima, 14 years old, called this piece ‘Sadness’. She says that it shows her dreaming of her school back in Syria. Rima is part of the Castle Art Project, taking place in Akre Syrian refugee camp, Kurdistan-Iraq.
The Castle Art process in action. From drawings and discussion to team-work on the paints. Beautiful work last week. Original drawings done by Naya and Newroz. Naya and her family have recently left for Germany, like so many others, and Newroz’s family decided to return to Syria. Very difficult decisions for families to make.
The Castle Art crew at work on the first half of an enormous mural. This will cover the last section of the bottom floor of their home, a former Saddam-era prison in Kurdistan, Iraq, and will link up approximately 2000m2 of murals painted by the Syrian refugee youth over the course of a year.
Painting by Naya, again, watch this space, we'll turn it into a mural.

Illustrator Molly Crabapple and writer Marwan Hisham wanted to capture the scenes of life amid war that often go unreported in Iraq and Syria, where the Islamic State has captured territory.
Check out the amazing work of Molly Crabapple, and a big thank you to her for dropping a line in for our Castle Art project!
“Castle Art is an incredible project in Akre Camp, Iraqi Kurdistan, where young Syrian artists paint murals.”
