The 31st of October is the festivity of the Castanyada, where it’s traditional to eat roasted chestnuts, panellets and baked sweet potatoes, and sing songs about the festivity.
This tradition is symbolized by the figure of the castanyera (“chestnut seller”), who is an old woman who sells chestnuts on the street. In autumn, in the Catalan Countries and other parts of the world you can find them easily in the streets selling hot chestnuts wrapped in a newspaper.
The castanyera is represented wearing the clothes that working class Catalan women wore about 100 years ago and earlier: a long skirt, an apron, and a shawl around her shoulders and head. In Catalonia, in schools a woman dressed like this will come to give roasted chestnuts to the children, and most kindergardens and many schools have the tradition of dressing up like a castanyera on this day.
