The 31st of October is the festivity of the Castanyada, where itâs traditional to eat roasted chestnuts, panellets and baked sweet potatoes, and sing songs about the festivity.
This tradition is symbolized by the figure of the castanyera (âchestnut sellerâ), who is an old woman who sells chestnuts on the street. In autumn, in the Catalan Countries and other parts of the world you can find them easily in the streets selling hot chestnuts wrapped in a newspaper.
The castanyera is represented wearing the clothes that working class Catalan women wore about 100 years ago and earlier: a long skirt, an apron, and a shawl around her shoulders and head. In Catalonia, in schools a woman dressed like this will come to give roasted chestnuts to the children, and most kindergardens and many schools have the tradition of dressing up like a castanyera on this day.
The month of Octoberđ
I decided to represent this month with a Castañera (for the tradition of âla Castanyadaâ here in Catalonia) This is the last piece I made for the 2020's calendar, if you want to check the other month and contributors check:

Catalan festivities
La Castanyada is a traditional festivity celebrated in Catalonia on the eve of All Saintsâ Day. On this day, itâs common to eat roasted chestnuts, panallets (a special kind of biscuits) and baked sweet potatoes.
The festival is usually represented with the figure of a castanyera: an old lady, dressed in peasantâs clothing and wearing a headscarf, sitting behind a table, roasting chestnuts for street sale.
Children also sing especial Castanyada songs, the most famous of which is Marrameu Torra Castanyes. Many schools and towns also organise a party where each class or group prepares a different traditional Catalan dance and performs it.
