This is my cast sheet for Character Design.
The two on the left are the Kwestian twins (Ask ‘Asky’ Kwestian and Answer ‘Anny’ Kwestian) and they are villains of the story. Asky along with her role of villain is also protagonist and her sister takes the role of deutagonist. They are both quite small in size compared to the rest of the cast, which conveys their youth and possibly even their fragility as children. They also both feature many curved surfaces and smooth shapes, these round appearences also helps to put across the idea that they are vulnerable children. However, the round shapes also act as subversion to their roles as villains and this is further emphasized by by the triangular and sharp shapes in their designs. Both characters have very sharp silhouettes, which suggests caution.
Being twins they have very similar designs, however there are distinguishing differences between them (without making the fact they are twins unclear). While they are wearing very similar clothing, they both possess different symbols, Asky’s being a question mark and Anny’s being an exclamation point. They are also both wearing different shoes. Asky’s shoes are walking boots and imply an adventurous nature. The untied right shoe and tied up left shoe also show that while she does try, she is a bit scatterbrained. Anny on the other hand is wearing fluffy boots, which implies her possible interest in the aesthetic appeal of objects. Due to the actions their caretaker (‘Her Unmoving’) when filling them with magic, Asky and Anny also have different eye colours, green and pink respectively. The reason I have chosen green and pink is because they are contrasting colours and work nicely in distinguishing the two. They also have star shaped patterns in both of their eyes, which are pointing the inverted direction than the other twin’s pattern. They also share pink and green in eachother’s designs which further emphasises the connection between the two as siblings. As for the colour of their shared cloaks, purplish hues/shades carry the implication of magic in the setting of the story so to characters in the story Asky and Anny would appear witch like in their appearances. Additionally, I chose to give both of them hats that look similar to traditional witch hats to carry across the impression that they are witch-like to the audience.
North is the most prominent hero in the story and also the main antagonist. North is the princess to a major kingdom in the story’s setting and is also a knight. She works her best to ensure that other worlders such as ‘Her Unmoving’ and abominations such as ‘Josh’ can not cause harm to the people of her world. North has a lot of sharp triangular points in her design and is built up of many squarish shapes, this emphasises both her danger as a legitimate threat and her orderly personality respectively. There is a also the a reoccurring shape of a 4 point star (and diamonds) in her design, representative of the north star, her family’s crest. The blue of the crest in the center of her chest is the only blue in a different hue in her design not including her sword. This is to draw the eye and emphasise this aspect of her design that is separate from her individuality. Blue was chosen as a major colour in her design as it is a regal colour that can also be associated with things such as ‘calm’ and ‘dependable strength’. For North’s design I research both the attire of royalty and the armour of english knights.
Rocko was created as a team effort between Anny and Asky, Anny animated the rocks that compose his body and Asky drew a face on his shoulder in marker and named him. Rocko was originally intended to be used as a powerful minion but proved unfit for fighting so now he’s used as an errand boy, (even occasionally taking orders from North). Despite being made of rocks, Rocko has a very round design, which emphasies his kindness and makes him seem approachable. He also has moss growing on his underside to emphasise the notion that he is composed of stone even further.
Originally a character I created during a character design session. Her Unmoving is an other-worlder who has taken it upon herself to bring the otherworlds back to the earth that the humans drove them out of. Doing this would possibly mean wide-scale destruction and even war. So she is constantly opposed by most humans in the world. Asky and Anny are her adopted daughters, found in the woods at a very young age. She infused them both with magic powers which gave them altered appearances along with extraordinary abilities. She has a sleek white design with many sharp points. The sharp edges give off a sense of danger and her height invites intimidation. The fact she is plain white almost gives off a ‘pure’ or ‘different’ feeling from the other designs, setting her apart from the others.
m̧̝̦͍̹̪̠̖̹̈̽ͫ̆͟ͅY̯̖̪̝̱ͤ͂́͠͡ ̳͈̟̖͔̦͍̜̤̄̀n̵̝̬̦̣̞͖̩̝̍̊͑ͬ̑̚͜͞A̧̢̼͔̠͋̿̔͌̂̈́ͩͧM͍̟̀̆ͧͭ͐͝ḛ̷̢̜̪͉̥̬̬̅͒͛̇ , or ‘Josh’ (Nickname), is a corrupted human who also wishes for the other worlders to return, but purely for the destruction it would bring (he really wants everyone and himself to die, he thinks it’d be fun). Technically Asky and Anny’s ally, as they are working towards the same goal but they also find themselves not wanting to support his actions. A lot of sharp shapes, invites caution, some misleading curved surfaces such as his cresent moon mask. Dark colours were used, including purple which carries contextual meaning in the world’s setting (there’s an impression he’s made of magic). Missing his right arm and left leg, but can still use them by making similar invisible constructions out of magic (as shown by his slipper and mitten). He also has a scar over his heart from North’s blade in the shape of a 4 point star with the same colour scheme of Asky and Anny’s orbs.
