The Clock Store - Silly Symphony, 1937

Broad-arm Windsor chairs and a 17th-century oak table define the Dining Area at one end of the living room. A Dutch brass chandelier, a tall case clock and a gleaming brass container add distinction.

 Late 18th century case clock or “grandfather clock.”

   The case is cherry wood with applied molding. The dial is sheet metal, hand-painted with brightly colored flowers. Roman numerals indicate the hours, while Arabic numerals indicate the minutes. The hands are hand-forged iron, possibly original.

   A handwritten note is pasted inside the door, dated 1924. "This clock belonged to Harry W. Howard Jr. It came from Germany and is over 100 years old.”

    Another note is handwritten on the margins of a newspaper clipping entitled “The Old Grandfather Clock.”

  having a circular silvered dial with Roman numeral hours and Arabic minutes set with seconds and moon phase dials over a painted face depicting a dancing couple and a bagpiper, the dial signed Willem Jan Bramer Amsterdam, the domed hood carved to show foliate scrolls, scallop forms and openworked lattice, all over a rectangular case set on a bombe plinth.  Height 100 inches.  Property from the Estate of Thomas Whittinghill, Wonder Lake, Illinois
