I'm like 98% sure they killed Michael just to get Jane and Rafael back together. It was lazy af imo, especially with the 4-year time jump (not to mention cruel after having him survive in 3x01). I feel bad, but I'm done with the show. I'm just so tired of shows killing main characters for shock value.
I SHARE YOUR PAIN, and Iâm sorry one of your favourite shows let you down like this, and that you lost one of your few OTPs, but⌠Iâm probably the wrong person to vent to, sorry! I was and still am devastated because I loved Michael, and my first thought was ânoooooooo, I canât watch this show ever againâ and I almost reblogged a few posts along those lines but, tbh? Iâm gonna keep watching it, and Iâm pretty sure itâs still gonna be my happy place.Â
I understand why people are jumping ship, but Jane/Michael was an added bonus for me, and I honestly never expected to get as much quality material for them as we did. I genuinely believe the show did their story justice: against all (ok, my) expectations, Jane picked Michael over the sexy, unpredictable guy. I love the show for doing justice to what Jane feels at certain moments in her life â not to how she should feel at all times. I understood why Rafael appealed to her more than Michael for a while there (even though I didnât ship them), and I loved that the show didnât make it seem like she made the ~wrong~ choice by giving a relationship with him a try: she simply needed more trust and stability at that moment in time than he could give her (ahh, the side effects of a hot and steamy romance). I loved watching Jane fall in love with Michael all over again, absolutely, because Iâd been rooting for them from the start, but mostly? I loved that stability won out for her in s2 because I honestly wasnât expecting that.Â
And⌠well, s3 has just not been as enjoyable to me as s1-2. Not because watching Jane and Michael being happy together is boring, but because the twists and turns Iâd grown to love about the show (such as Jane picking Michael â honestly, Iâm still not over it) were⌠not as exciting anymore. My attention kept wandering and that never happened during s1-2. Iâve seen a lot of âI just want Jane to be happyâ posts, and I understand the sentiment, but I personally loved watching her juggle all her problems, and trying to find a balance between her kid, career, and relationships. I loved the drama of it all, and I was sort of missing that this season. And Iâm not saying they had to kill off Michael to shake things up, but Iâm also not seeing why they werenât allowed to do it. I really donât think the writers did it for shock value. Theyâd been hinting at his upcoming death for some time, and most fans didnât even expect him to survive the s2 finale. To me, itâs great and not cruel that they let Jane and Michael be happily married for a while, and Iâm happy for Jane that she got those moments with the man she chose to marry. While I feel cheated about the 4-year time jump (that part Iâm actually really annoyed about, because seeing other charactersâ angst is what the appeal of hurt/conflict is all about), Iâm⌠sort of looking forward to this new phase in Janeâs life.Â
ALSO, I really donât think the writers killed Michael off just to make Jane/Rafael endgame. Yes, thereâs a part of me thatâs like âMichael had to die for that to become an option again, huhâ, ngl, but⌠itâs not as if Rafael will have âwonâ if they get together again. Janeâs husband died! And if they are endgame, I think itâs a pretty bold move to let their story play out like this. Jane picked Rafael once, only to slowly realize she wanted the life Michael stood for and pick him. I'd be interested to see what it takes for Jane to see Rafael as a romantic option again. Iâve seen a lot of posts about how great it is that Jane The Virgin doesnât treat unpredictable romances as more romantic than ones that are based on communication, and I agree, but I also think that the show wasnât pushing a âthis is what relationships should be like, alwaysâ agenda by letting Jane choose Michael in s2. It was trust and stability she wanted at the time. Maybe Rafael can give that to her now. Or maybe he can give her something else she needs. If the show continues to allow Jane to explore her options, and change her mind, and love people depending on how she feels at certain moments in time, Iâll be a happy viewer. A happy viewer who will always love (Jane/)Michael and who is still not a fan of Rafael, but a happy viewer nonetheless. Â
I know this probably sounds a bit annoying to you (Iâd certainly feel annoyed if I were more annoyed with the show atm), but this is my take on it, and I canât really make myself feel anything else. But Iâm very sorry the show let you down so much! *hugs*
