She gazed down at the thick piece of paper as she held it in her hands. Â She still couldnât believe what it said, or what it meant. Silent tears fell down her cheeks as she read the words to herself over and over again.Â

âHey, kid,â Hopper called, breaking her concentration. Â âAre you alright?â
She glanced up at him from across the dining table. Â Her beautiful brown doe eyes were red and watery. Â She smiled and nodded her head.
âYes, Iâm alright.â
Hopper wasnât convinced.  She was crying, after all.  âYeah?  You sure?  Do you want to talk about it?â
She looked down at the paper again for a moment, and then back at Hopper. Â She wrinkled her nose before asking, Â âDoes this mean youâre my new Papa?â
The words both stung Jim Hopper, and warmed his heart all at once.  On the one hand, he didnât want to be associated with that guy; the one who formerly called himself Elâs âPapaâ.  After all he put her through? Twelve years of poking and prodding and experiments.  Twelve years without human compassion or love.  No, Jim Hopper was not her ânew Papaâ.  Except he was, wasnât he?  He loved her.  He loved this kid with every fiber in his being.  And there was nothing he wouldnât do to protect her, especially from people like âPapa.â  And with that little piece of paper that she held in her hands, it was official; she was his, and he was hers. Â
He was taking too long to respond.  What does that mean, El wondered to herself.  Does he not want to be my Papa?  Did I do something  bad? Her expectant eyes had been staring at him, waiting for answers, but now she dropped them to the floor and began to frown.
âYeah, I...I guess thatâs what it means.â
El jumped up with a start and dropped her paper onto the table.
âREALLY?!?!â she squealed with heart eyes.
Before Hopper could respond, Elâs arms were wrapped around him in the tightest embrace sheâd ever given him. Â Her pretty dimpled smile was from one ear to the other. Â He hugged her back just as snug.
âYes, Iâm your new, uh...âPapaâ... But kid, weâve got to work on that name.â
El broke away from the hug and looked up at him with confusion.
âWell, yeah. Â A name. Â What youâre going to call me. Â I mean, your Papa was your Papa... Â Lots of bad memories where that came from, yeah?â
âYes,â she understood.
âSo how about we call me something else?â
âWell, I donât know. Â Whatever you like. Â You can always just call me Hopper. Â Thatâs what everyone else calls me.â
Eleven thought it over for a minute.
âNo. Â I donât want to call you that. Â My name is Hopper now, too. Â We need something better. You donât want to be called Papa. Â What about Pop?â
âYes. Â Joyce calls you Hop. Â So Iâll call you Pop.â
âPop...â he said to himself, slightly flustered after hearing El mention Joyce.  But after some contemplation, âI like it, kid.  Pop it is.â
Eleven smiled, and then burrowed her eyebrows.
âBut what about me?â she asked.
âWhat do you mean? What about you?â
âThe Birth Certificate?â
âYes. Birth Certificate.â
âIt doesnât say Eleven. Â It says Jane. Â Jane Hopper.â
âOh, right.â Hopper picked up the birth certificate from the table. Â He looked it over for maybe the hundredth time, and then back at Eleven again. Â Or was she Jane? Â Shit. Â This was confusing for him, too.
âWell, what do you think? Â What do you want to be called?â
His daughter took a seat on the couch just a few feet away. Â She was deep in thought. 011 was never meant to be her name, and it never felt like one, either. Â At least not until Mike Wheeler came along.
Ah, Mike Wheeler. Â She believed he saved her life that night when he found her in the woods. Â She was cold, wet, and frightened. Â Her first memories of Mike were so.... warm. Â He gave her warm clothes, a warm place to sleep, warm food. Â He kept her safe from the bad men. Â And he gave her a name; El. Â Aside from that poor man called Benny at the diner, Mike was the first person to ever show her any basic human compassion. Â That meant a great deal to her and was something sheâd never forget.
She knew her Mama called her Jane. Â But Mama was gone. Â Maybe not physically, but she was still just... gone. Â She did as Mama wished and found her sister, Kali. Â She introduced herself to Kali and her gang as Jane. Â Jane was bitchinâ. Â Jane was cool. She was dark and mysterious. Â Punk rock. But was she really Jane? Â She walked away from Jane. Â She left Jane behind to come home. Â Home was Pop. Â Home was Mike. Â Home was... friends.
She snapped back to reality as Hopper joined her on the couch.
âWell, whatâs it gonna be?â
âYeah, kid. Â What are we gonna call you?â
âWell,â she began, âI guess, you can always call me, âhey kidâ...â
She giggled, and Hopper grinned.
âBut, Mike already gave me my name.â
Hopper raised his eyebrows, âIs that so?â
âYes. Eleven was... just a number... before. Â But the first night I met Mike... he told me his name was Mike. Â Short for Michael. Â And he asked if he could call me El. Short for Eleven... Â I never knew my name was Jane. Â El was the first name someone gave me. Â It feels.... right.â
Hopper smiled and wrapped one arm around Elâs shoulder before giving her a soft kiss on her forehead.
âYes. Â It feels right, El. Â Thatâs your name.â
El smiled. Â âPromise?â
âI promise. Â I mean... your legal name is still gonna be Jane Hopper, but we can call you El. Â Short for Jane.â
El blushed, and both father and daughter laughed.
âSo, that Wheeler boy... He gave you your name, eh?
Hopper groaned.  He had to admit, Mike wasnât a bad kid, but he just became Elâs legal dad. TODAY.  He wasnât ready for boys.
âOkay, if Mike wants to give you a name, so be it. Just donât be in any hurry to take his last name yet, okay?â
âWhat do you mean?â El was confused.
Hopper began to laugh uncontrollably. Â Of course El wouldnât understand the concept of marriage yet. Â Baby steps, Jim, Â Baby steps.
âItâs nothing, just a dumb âdad jokeâ, thatâs all.â
A little embarrassed at his own joke, Hopper continued to laugh, and even though El didnât know what was so funny, his goofiness was contagious, and she began laughing, too.
She was glad he wasnât her new Papa. Â No. Â No more. Â She had Pop, now. Â And she knew heâd never let Papa hurt her ever again.
