ā Ā What is their typical response to being given orders?
Stefan doesnāt respond well to threats. Heās very cooperative, but selective, obviously. He was heavily influenced by his parents, especially his Father throughout his childhood. Heās hesitant to take Damonās advice, mainly because he believes that Damonās lack of taking any responsibility is the reason their Father has double the expectations. Itās always weighed down on him. He admires Damonās life philosophy, but heās not easily influenced by it. Heās kind of a Mommaaās boy, but thatās a secret.Ā Stefan is easily influenced by his good friends, especially Lee and Lexi. Lee was a bad influence on Mason and Stefan their first year of college, but in the best kind of way. Lee is the friend that lives in a way so polar opposite to the life Stefanās always lived. As does Lexi, who inspires the open mindedness in Stefan. Mason and Dave have influence over Stefan, in the sense that he trusts their judgment and wouldnāt hesitate if the time called for his participation. Heās easily convinced/manipulated by these people, and in some cases, like with Lexi, she may mean well but her ideals arenāt necessarily the best fit for Stefan. He doesnāt realize it though.
Stefan with his Parents: Growing up, Stefan hardly questioned or disobeyed his parents. They dictated orders, which he followed under the impression thatās the way to live. Because of this, Stefan never really connected to his Father on an emotional level, the way he had with his brother, Damon. Whenever bad things happened, Stefan and Damon were not allowed to mourn or show pain. They were forced to keep moving and continue to what they needed to do. With his Father, the bond feels more like a business tie, than a Father and son relationship. Stefanās willingness to follow and act upon Giuseppeās every order had landed him the role of being granted their family legacy. Ā Giuseppe knew Damon would rebel, intent on following his own mind, while with Stefan, it would take effortless convincing to comply. He entered college with the predetermined responsibility, and this is a reason why he freaked. Stefan almost always did what he was told as a subconscious means of avoiding the comparison he often considered between himself and Damon. Ā Of the two, Damon was the leader, who showed him how things were done, whoād probably never for a moment, contemplated the insecurities that constantly run through Stefanās mind. Having feared the comparison, Stefan mostly complied his Fatherās orders. Despite being aware of his misery to come with his Fatherās control overl him. He wanted everyone to be happy, and for the longest time, aimed to make his Father happy and proud of him. It bothers Stefan that his Father believes he knows what Stefan wants out of life, or rather, what he needs. Ā Stefan gained his Fatherās full approval at 17. The achievement was ironic, because wining his Fatherās full, utmost approval, meant taking on a role he didnāt want.
* Canon Reference: A quote from Stefanās journal in 1864, āFather knew Damon wouldnāt stand for it. He knew that I would say yes, just like always.ā SuggestingĀ that Stefanās only significance being his obedience.Ā Giuseppe admits the moment Stefan and Damon sided with the vampires, was the minute they were dead to him. In a sense, once Stefan no longer obeyed hid Father, he was no longer of valued importance. His Father was so quick to cut him off, no matter how many years Stefan devoted complete loyalty. Despite that, up until the moment he acted upon instinct to defend himself from his Fatherās attack, Stefan plead he would allow himself to die before transitioning. Ā Stefan simply wanted to say his good-byes, ending on a note of his Fatherās good will. His defense countered with a force of strength heād only discovered then and there, and Giuseppeās open wounds curved the turning point. His Fatherās blood filled the air with a compelling scent thatād soon led to Giuseppeās perish, forever on Stefanās hands. This sort of parallels the RP with Stefan cutting loose of unwanted responsibilities, he wants to better understand himself, and to do that, he must be selfish until his Father is willing to compromise. This is why Stefan is having a hard time making peace with his actions. He canāt write things off with simple justification, not when it comes to the people he cares about.Ā
