It is honestly really weird to be in a tiny speck of a country with a 0,8 trillion dollar trust fund (oil-funded, sadly) being this “socialist utopia” in the eyes of so many, which you’d think would make us safe from almost whatever else happens in the world, only then to remember the terrorist attack by Anders Behring-Breivik and that our prime minister is a Maggie Thatcher-fan and that our equaint to the Democrats are in the very same crisis as the American Democrats because they can no longer be quite identified as being on either side of the fence and a government that have been in charge for close to eight years chipping away at the social welfare that MAKES Norway (and the other Scandinavian countries) into what we’re being described as in the eyes of the world and of course the Ways of Seeing-spectacle. Like, we are liberal as hell in many things, including big forces of our own political right, but it’s been becoming abundently clear these last years that NO country is EVER, EVER safe from centre-liberalist bullshit paving the way for stuff that’s far, far worse. Oh and by the way, I don’t say Thatcher-fan idly as upon Thatcher’s death she praised her quite openly and even worse, is copying her tactics. I’ll get back to that shortly.

Thing about that Ways of Seeing-play is that Ingvil Tybring-Gjedde was furious that the play had a photograph of her house as background, and percieved that as a direct insult given the plays’ subject matter, which was about how essentially how the Norwegian officials tend to divorce themselves from the public and sometimes reality in matters of military, surveilance, intelligence agency (it touches on among other things illegal surveilance on the political left) and probably most notably for Tybring-Gjedde, immigration. The political party she and her husband represents have pretty much always dunked on immigration for the very same racist reasons you can imagine everyone else do, and like so many populists of the same cloth they also shun academia. She felt, shall we say, targeted. So, as wife of the then-current justice minister, she used her husband and his and her connections to influence complaints from government-hold about the play. She visibly tried to pull strings on HIGH ground to get the play straight up shut down. Our PRIME MINISTER Erna Solberg stated that the guys who made the play should... you know what, I can just google-translate this DIRECT QUOTE: “I think that those who have made the play must think about the fact that they also help to put a focus on politicians and their surroundings and people, which contributes to it being tougher to be a politician. Then they must have the backbone to stand in it. I must say that I'm disappointed today when one chooses to speculate about this.”

I can guarantee that nothing was lost in translation on this. And what makes the Thatcher-y bit come forth even more? After Tybring-Gjedde was convicted of the charges of threatening democracy (after, as I mentioned in the tags on my previous post, also setting fires on and destroying/tagging her own property and writing fake threat letters in an attempt to make her appear as a victim), Erna was asked if she would apologize for her previous statements. She didn’t, and maintains that she won’t. Think about that for a sec.

That’s not a one-time thing, either, as Erna repeatedly words herself in a way so that she never ever openly apologizes or admits fault. She’s done this for years (a defense mechanism in part, I imagine, for being bullied so much by her peers when she stepped into politics because she was a woman in a (conservative) man’s world) but it sets some of the presedence for how politics are practiced here; she’s refused to call out what’s happening in the US for what it is when asked; she’s often criticized the media and her opposition in that vaguely commanding way seen up above. Whenever opposition arises she and her compatriots try to divert the attention and shut down any further prying and claims responsibility frome everyone but themselves. She was already dead to me after the Dalai Llama-affair, but she and her companions are, make no mistake, bad news. And while their politics are often not as drastic or as extreme as Bolsonaro or Trump or even the worse parts of the centrists of the West, they too are key examples of how even in the mildest form the right as it is is a beast that will never be quenched until the Overton window has burst.

The landslide I mentioned, by the way, has a miraculously low death toll. I suggest you all look up images of the landslide on Gjerdrum for yourselves because it really is something. And also, next election almost anywhere,
