So I decided that, in his youth, Duncan runs into Lady Trevelyan (who's visiting Ferelden at the time). She initiates an affair (simply a one night stand) and Duncan - young and stupid - goes through with it. He just chalks it up as a bad decision the next day, and so does she, but she ends up getting pregnant with Bhaltair!
She doesn't contact Duncan and tell him, and instead convinces her husband it's his baby. However, being the seventh son, Lady Trevelyan quickly realises she can kill two birds with one stone.
She publicly promises her unborn child to the chantry, (much to Lord Trevelyans confusion, but he doesn't push it) and when Bhaltair is born, he's taken away to train with the templars! He has no communication from his family, and doesn't know them besides the name he carries

loved going through Valerian's tag !! Not sure if this has already been answered, but what is his relationship like with Neve? (bonus question if you feel like answering, what's the general vibes with each of the Veilguard companions?)
Hi ! thanks for browsing his tag AND this aks! :-) Valerian and Neve's relationship has it's quirks (including the whole left at altar thing in case anyone missed it) and they butt heads a lot due to their work flow and having differences in love language, BUT they are very much in a really supportive and loving relationship, Valerian worships the ground Neve walks on and Neve tries her hardest to match the affection in her own way. When it comes to the rest of the gang I'd say that it varies largely, Davrin, Taash and Valerian have a big playful rivalry and would die to protect one another. Val, Harding and Bellara and the bestest of friends, they are Valerian's safe person and vice versa they know they can come to each other for anything. Val and Emmrich have a more mentor and mentee relationship after Valerian becomes interested in blood magic but they are still pretty good friends and hangout after studies always. Lucanis and Valerian...... hrmmmm.... no.
