While younger bottlings, such as the 12-year-old, are known for their impetuous freshness and sharp smoke, the 18-year-old shows what happens when you give Caol Ila’s maritime character almost two decades to develop.
The Caol Ila 18 is not a “smoke monster” that overwhelms the palate. It represents the cultivated side of Islay. Through long maturation in oak barrels, the phenolic compounds (the smoke) have mellowed and formed a harmonious combination with fruity and spicy notes.
