In March 2026, the Islay distillery Kilchoman released the Kilchoman Maury Cask Matured Limited Edition 2026 – a genuine first and a highlight for Islay whisky enthusiasts.

What makes this bottling special is that it is not merely a short finishing period (secondary maturation), but a full-term maturation. The single malt spent its entire maturation period in casks that had previously held Maury, a naturally sweet French fortified wine.

What is Maury, and why is it so exciting?

Maury is a protected naturally sweet fortified wine (Vin Doux Naturel) from the Roussillon region in southern France, produced primarily from Grenache Noir grapes. In terms of flavour, it is reminiscent of a full-bodied Port, but often offers even more intense dark fruit notes and subtle oxidative spice.

When you think of whisky from the Scottish island of Islay, peaty smoke usually comes to mind immediately. Yet Bruichladdich’s „The Classic Laddie“ completely defies this stereotype. It is the distillery’s flagship expression and proves that Islay can also be quite different: elegant, fruity and completely unpeated.

Bruichladdich describes itself as Progressive Hebridean Distillers. With „The Classic Laddie“, the distillery places maximum emphasis on transparency and craftsmanship:

100% Scottish barley: Only barley grown in Scotland is used, with some batches even containing barley sourced directly from Islay.

No fixed recipe: Every barley harvest and every cask type is slightly different, so no two batches taste exactly the same. On the back of every bottle is a code that allows you to look up the exact cask composition of your whisky on the distillery’s website.

Unadulterated: The whisky is neither chill-filtered nor coloured with caramel. Its pale golden colour comes entirely from the casks. Higher bottling strength: Bottled at a robust 50% ABV, it delivers remarkable flavour intensity without being harsh on the palate.

The Ledaig Castaway is one of the most exciting—and boldest—releases the Scottish Tobermory Distillery, located on the Isle of Mull, has brought to market in recent years. If you love peated whisky but are looking for a truly unconventional flavour profile, this special release, launched in May 2026, is just the thing for you.

The absolute highlight of this single malt is its extraordinary cask maturation. For this release, Master Blender Julieann Fernandez completely dispensed with the distillery's usual ex-bourbon casks. Instead, the typically heavily peated Ledaig spirit (approx. 35 ppm) was matured in a rare combination of Caribbean rum casks and Mexican tequila casks.

The result is a fascinating marriage of Scottish island peat smoke and sun-kissed tropical cask influences.

The Wolfburn Small Batch No. 416 (10 Years Old) is a truly special release from the still relatively young yet highly acclaimed distillery in Thurso – Scotland’s northernmost mainland distillery.

This limited edition marks two milestones at once: it is the first 10-year-old release in Wolfburn’s Small Batch series and, at the same time, the first bottling in the range that has not merely undergone a finishing period but has matured entirely for 10 years in an exotic cask type.

The story behind the name ‘416’

The number 416 is not a marketing gimmick but a precise designation of origin. It refers to the exact location of the casks in the warehouses near the coast of Thurso: Warehouse 4, Row (Stow) 16.

Back in 2016, the team secured a small selection of exceptional first-fill Ruby Port Pipes from Portugal’s renowned Douro Valley and filled them directly with fresh Wolfburn new make spirit. After a decade of maturation, a total of 3,900 bottles were released worldwide in the spring of 2026.

The Glenmorangie Harrison Ford Limited Edition is an exclusive Highland single malt release, created in collaboration between the famous Hollywood actor Harrison Ford and Glenmorangie’s Director of Whisky Creation, Dr. Bill Lumsden.

The partnership came about as part of the tongue-in-cheek advertising campaign ‘Once Upon a Time in Scotland’. Cask maturation: Classic ex-bourbon casks + finish in heavily toasted Portuguese red wine casks

Signatory Vintage Whisky Cask Strength Collection – Glenrothes 30 y.o. When an independent bottler such as Signatory Vintage allows a cask from the Speyside distillery Glenrothes to mature for a full 30 years and then releases it as part of its renowned Cask Strength Collection (often in the exclusive sub-range Symington’s Choice), we are talking about an absolute premium whisky.

A prime example is the current bottling from 1995. Typically, the natural cask strength after 30 years is still a robust 51% to 55% ABV. This ensures an exceptionally intense mouthfeel.

A whisky of this calibre needs time in the glass. After pouring, allow it to breathe for a few minutes.

Bunnahabhain Whisky Westering Home No. 2 – An Cuan Garbh 15 y.o.

The Bunnahabhain 15 Year Old – An Cuan Garbh No. 2 is part of a special three-part series within the Westering Home Collection.

The Gaelic name An Cuan Garbh translates as “The Rough Sea” and pays homage to the untamed waters of the Atlantic Ocean surrounding the Scottish island of Islay. The series symbolises the stormy journey back to the sheltered bay of the Bunnahabhain Distillery.

Bunnahabhain is renowned for its classic character: unpeated, oily, maritime, and naturally rich. For No. 2, this distinctive distillery character has been combined with a very specific cask finish: Fino sherry casks.

As Fino is the driest of all sherry styles, it does not overwhelm the single malt with heavy sweetness but instead perfectly accentuates the salty, maritime soul of the distillery.

Ardbeg Whisky Dolce

Ardbeg Dolce is a special release from the renowned Ardbeg Distillery, famous for its bold and smoky single malts from the Scottish island of Islay. This edition combines the traditional, robust Ardbeg character with a Mediterranean flair, resulting in a whisky that is both rich and well balanced.

Matured in casks that previously held sweet dessert wine, Ardbeg Dolce offers a fascinating interplay of aromas. anCnoc 16 Year Old is an absolute classic for lovers of honest, fruit-forward single malts without all the frills. It comes from the Knockdhu distillery in the Scottish Highlands, which bottles its whiskies under the name anCnoc (Gaelic for ‘the hill’) to avoid confusion with the Knockando distillery.

What makes the anCnoc 16 special is its uncompromising maturation: it spends its entire 16 years exclusively in carefully selected American ex-bourbon casks.
