Today's video tutorial is from YouTube and it focuses on Canon's Digital Photo Professional (DPP). The software is Canon's free RAW conversion / editing software.
The tutorial focuses specifically on adjusting white balance and on dealing with noise created by a low light situation. It's a quick little tutorial (~7 minutes) that demonstrates some of the power of DPP.
If you don't have Digital Photo Professional and you lost your original Canon utilities CD, read this guide to learn how to download DPP and install it.
Canon DPP Application Review
Surprisingly simple to operate, I do find that Canon did a fine job allowing her users to perform quick post processing tasks on their RAW images (only if you can first overcome the obstacle of actually obtaining a copy from the Internet).Β
Sharpening, contrast adjustments, EV compensation, color toning are all easily within reach when you begin fine-tuning your work. The crop tool however was found wanting as it lacks the standard trimming dimensions like 16:9 which I commonly use with my Nikon gears.Β
The ability to tweak sharpness directly at the RAW level is somewhat not fully understood at this point in time and has to be further explored before I can better explain the mechanics of it.Β
Being a user of Adobe Photoshop and other toolkit like Apple's Aperture, I find this tool a fresh welcome to ensure my workflow continues to be short and quick.
Canon DPP 3.10.X Not Mac OS X Lion Friendly
With that confirmed, looks like the only way to transfer my Canon images to my Macbook Pro will still be via a conventional CF card reader! Yikes!
Canon - Strike One.
Canon Digital Photo Professional 3.9.3
If you, like me, received or just got your hand on a used Canon DSLR, chances are, it will not come with any image viewer program from Canon. Neither will you be able to get your hands on a copy as Canon only distributes "updater" patches of the DPP program.
But don't fret! You can still have it indirectly via the Internet if you try hard enough to decipher what and where to download them.
I got the base DPP 1.0 from [here] and thereafter upgraded that base to the latest incarnation 3.9.3 from Canon's web site.
Talk about irritations...
