Canna d’India (Canna indica L., Cannaceae)

The open canna 'Cleopatra' flower. We have a petal that's half red and half yellow! If you're looking at this and thinking that is clearly not half, that's because those "petals" are actually staminodes, sterile, flamboyant stamens that have become the showiest part of the inflorescence. One is mostly yellow with a bit of red! The actual petals are the skinny bits around them. (Please direct any complaints about this to canna management.)

Canna 'Cleopatra'. This is a chimeric variety expressing two phenotypes, one green with yellow flowers and the other red with red flowers. The inflorescence isn't always a mix of the two, but it's pretty cool when it is.

Canna 'Cleopatra'. This variety is a chimera of a purple-leaved plant with red flowers and a green-leaved plant with yellow flowers. In the cooler spring, purple tissue dominated the new growth, and I got solid red flowers. In the heat of summer, the green tissue seemed to do better, and I got yellow flowers. This inflorescence is a nice combo of them both.

Canna 'Cleopatra'. This plant is a chimera. The purple leaf tissue produces red flowers, the green produces yellow, and if the blooms occur in the right area, they may show varying combinations of both colors.
