UPGRADING OUR PACKS
I already know that for weekend hikes I can just take my day pack. Tate bought me the Deuter Futura Pro 34 SL Pack in an awesome Lava and Papaya color for a Valentine’s Day surprise this year and I haven’t used any other bag for anything since. It’s so comfortable and Tate knows he made a good choice and likes to point out how much more advanced my pack is in comparison to his own 38L Salomon Sky.
My pack does have its downsides though. It isn’t quite large enough to have a sleeping bag compartment so I spent my entire Northwest vacation finding creative ways to carry it around in my compression sack like a purse. I’m a pretty short girl too (5’1”) and maintaining a tall pack took some getting used to definitely, but overall I am pleased.
My pack definitely has its perks too. It’s made with built in pocket with a rain cover that I thankfully haven’t had to use yet. This backpack is pocket city too, easy reservoir access, hipbelt pocket, water bottle mesh pocket, 2-way zipper pocket to get to the deeply packed stuff.
Unfortunately though, I have almost reached capacity in this pack with my extra change of clothes and a jacket, extra pair of shoes and a pair of sandals, my minimal toiletries, headlamp and a couple books. Which means, in order to be able to add my water reservoir, food/snacks, rain jacket, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, compact camp stove, and whatever else it is that I’m forgetting right now, that I’m going to have to get a larger pack for the lengthy trails I’m leading up to.
So while it’s still 2014, my goal is to find the perfect pack to get me through it all. I’ve got a lot to consider and since this city I live in doesn’t have many options for the 50+ liter backpack I’m trying to find that it means I’m doing all my searching online. I have a few in mind, but honestly with Christmas being so close I feel biased on the price of them right now. Tate is also on the hunt so we will have to mention our decision on here when it’s made. It’s an exciting time to hunt for our new pack, mostly because it means that we’re going to have to put it to use as much as possible and we will.
