The dreams were much easier to handle these days. In the days after her Joining, they had been horrible. Visions of corruption, of the dark oppressive endless black, the vicious speech of the darkspawn, and occasionally the roaring of the Archdemon.

Alistair had said that it was sometimes worse for wardens who joined during a blight. She hoped that was true, because if it wasn’t then she had to be incredibly weak. She’d wake up shaking, drenched in a cold sweat, convinced that her skin was fading into the corrupted flesh of the darkspawn, and it would be several moments before she remembered where she was and her heartbeat began to fade back into its normal rhythm.

There had never been any hope of sleeping afterwards. At the beginning of their journey she had been dangerously exhausted because of it, forced to snatch naps whenever she could. 

She had avoided telling anyone, even him, just how much they troubled her. Partly because she was embarrassed by her weakness, and partly because her upbringing had taught her never to show weakness. Not to people you had to lead.

These days, the dreams were a little easier.

She wasn’t sure whether it was because she had been a warden for a few months now, or because her sleeping arrangements had changed, but either way, when she woke, she was usually able to recognise that the warmth surrounding her was him, and not the foul breath of the Archdemon. Usually, she could run her fingers along the arms that held her tightly and safely, revel in the feel of his skin and the corded strength that lay beneath it, and know that she was safe.

Sometimes, if she was still a little shaken, she’d place her hand on his chest to feel the strong pulse of his heart beating beneath in a rhythm that never failed to soothe her back to sleep.

But tonight, when she turned to do so, she found his eyes wide open and not just with wakefulness, but terror.

“You too, huh?” she murmured softly, her own fears easy to lay aside in the wake of the need to soothe his.

“You felt that?”  he breathed. She nodded. “It was like… like the Archdemon saw us. Saw us, what does that mean?”

“I don’t know,” she murmured. “You’re the senior warden here.”

That earned her one of his lopsided smiles, which she was pleased to see even if the terror hadn’t entirely faded from his eyes.

“I think…” he began.

But she didn’t get to hear what he thought, because at that moment an unmistakable growl rippled through the air, and she suddenly realised that the roiling in her blood was not, in fact, leftover nightmare fuel but a signal of darkspawn nearby.
