On the eve of my 17th birthday, everything changed. January 13th was always a favorite of mine of course, but this time around I received the biggest surprise of my life. I know it sounds sort of shitty, but I had to work that night. I was scheduled off, but my coworker needed me to fill in for her while her grandpa was in the hospital. Starbucks wasn’t too busy on Wednesday nights so I didn’t mind. That night I worked alone in the dimmed café wiping tables and listening to the radio, when a group of 4 boys walked in.

“Hi can I help yo-“ My eyes grew big, but I tried to stay calm.

“Hi!” The curly caramel haired one known as Ashton giggled.

“Hi.” I smiled. “What can I get you?” I asked ready to write.

“Could I get a medium black iced tea?” Luke asked.

“Same for me please.” Calum added.

I nodded and wrote on the cups.

“How about you Michael?” I said .

“You know us?” he laughed.

“Yeah, hah I do…” I gave a small laugh.

“Well you know me, but I don’t know you.. so what’s your name?” He chuckled leaning against the side of the counter.

“You’re stupid Mike.” Calum called from the other counter.

“Hey fuck you!” Michael yelled back and I couldn’t help but break into a fit of laughter.

“M-my name is Hannah.” I said between laughs.

“That’s cute! Well Hannah could I get a grande hot chocolate, and a date with you?” He winked.

Did Michael fucking Clifford just ask me on a date?!

I giggled and tried to hide my blush while writing on his cup.

“Oh uhm…sure that’d be great.” I smiled turning to begin the drinks.

Michael went and stood next to the other boys.

“Way to play that one off.” Luke joked slightly pushing Michael.

“Hey she said yes, so hop off.” He retorted.

“Here you go.” I said setting the drinks on the counter and they walked over.

“Are you the only one working?” Calum asked.

“Yeah I am.” I said looking at him.

“Well then come sit with us, we don’t have to leave anytime soon.” Luke added.

So I walked around the counter and took a seat at a table with them. We talked for about an hour and a half about the things they did on tour and just some random stuff. By the time we finished I needed to close up the store. They stayed outside as I locked up and we took a walk downtown.

“Mike we are gonna head back to the hotel, you gonna stay here?” Ashton asked as him and the others stood up to leave.

“Yeah I’m going to stay with Hannah for a little.” He smiled down at me.

“Okay, it was nice to meet you. I’m sure we will be getting to know you a lot better.” Calum winked and they waved goodbye.

Michael and I sat on the curb of the quiet street as the city lights shone above us.

“So tell me about yourself.” He said.

“What do you want to know?” I asked looking up at him.

“Anything, and everything.”

“Well…mint chocolate chip ice cream is my absolute favorite, I am by far the least athletic person ever, oh and today is my birthday.” I said looking around in the darkness.

“Well happy birthday!” He gleamed.

“Thank you!” I laughed.

We sat and talked for what felt like forever, and it was amazing.

“I better be getting home…” I said standing up.

“Do you need a ride?” He asked.

“Actually yeah… hah. I was going to catch the late bus, but I thought being with you was a little better.” I joked elbowing him lightly.

“Hahaha, well our hotel is only about 2 blocks that way, and I can get us a car there.” He offered.

I nodded and we walked side by side down the silent street. We arrived at the hotel and he called around the boys’ car. We climbed in and headed to my place. Once we arrived he got out and walked me to my door.

“Thank you so much for an amazing birthday.” I said smiling.

“It was my pleasure, but I hope this isn’t the last time I see you.” He said.

“Hopefully not.” I added.

“Uhm Hannah? Would you want to come to the concert here tomorrow?” He asked hesitantly.

Yes oh my god YES.

“Sure, that’d be cool.” I said calmly.

“Sweet, I will send a car for you tomorrow.” He smiled.
