11. Told each other a secret nobody else knew?
Oh man this is like all my OTPs. Damn. Okay.
Rayne was staring at him. Just staring and waiting. She deserved to hear something real from him, and he knew it. Goddamn it.
“Well? Why exactly am I supposed to believe you’re on my side? That you won’t arrest me? All this time dancing around each other, and you find out that I’m apparently some, what did you call it? Serial killer? I’m doing my job.”
“After all the shit we’ve been through in the past few days, and you still think I’d arrest you? Seriously?” Lucas started to pace back and forth.
“I don’t know,” Rayne sighed, “You just... you just confuse me. You’re so concerned with upholding the law. I’ve seen it in every other situation. What makes me different? What makes now different?”
He let out a half laugh, half grumble. “Fuck.”
The room was silent. The air hung between them like a curtain.
“Because sometimes I have my doubts too. Sometimes... ugh. Sometimes the bad guy walks because the law can’t bring him in.”
“It’s fine. Someone aught to know. He was... he was standing right there. Right on the other side of the glass. Couldn’t see me. I was safe. All I had to do was pick him out of the line up. But...” He swallowed hard, “But I just couldn’t. I was terrified he’d find me. Come for me.”
And there it was. His big failing. Part of the very reason he’d become a cop. To avenge his sister. And make up for being such a scared little shit.
