Pride Month Spotlight: Callen-Lorde’s Impact
Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, one of Komen Greater NYC’s longtime Community Partners, is a staple in New York City’s LGBTQ community all year round.
Callen-Lorde provides sensitive, quality health care and related services targeted to New York’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities, regardless of ability to pay.
One patient, a trans-woman, was referred to Callen-Lorde for a mammogram by her medical provider. The hormone replacement therapy she has been prescribed causes increased breast tissue growth, leading to the need for regular mammograms. The patient was uninsured at the time of the referral, so she met with Jodie, Callen-Lorde’s Women’s Case Manager, for assistance.
During their case management appointment, Jodie assessed her for CSP eligibility but the patient was ruled out because she is not cis-gender. At that point, Jodie connected the patient to the ScanVan, a mobile mammography unit also funded with a Komen Greater NYC grant, where she was seen at no cost.
We are happy to report the patient was able to receive a free mammogram, as directed by her medical provider, and her results were clear. She may not have otherwise been linked to the appropriate care (or even been referred to have a mammogram) had she not been under the medical care of a clinic like Callen-Lorde that provides comprehensive, competent care to people across the LGBTQ spectrum.
