WHY DO PEOPLE FALL FOR SCAMS?
Have you ever wondered why people fall for scams, especially for the ones that seem so âobviously fakeâ? You might be thinking something like, âI would never fall for a scam, because Iâm not dumb!â
Well, even the smartest people can be swindled out of their hard-earned money, because of psychological tactics used by scammers. Take a look at a few of them below:
Authority Figures: Scam callers pose as people who possess authority, such as an IRS employee, a government official, a policeman, or IT specialist. They are trained to speak in an authoritative manner, and take advantage of the fact that most people tend to obey instructions given to them by people in authority, especially if they fear negative repercussions for disobedience.
Social Norms: Fraudsters play upon our normal tendency to want to help others or repay someone for a gift. They may plead with us to send money for a sick child with cancer, or exchange personal information for a bonus check or free vacation. They often ask very politely, which makes their request harder to refuse.
Playing with emotions: Scamming is all about getting an emotional response from a victim, and not a logical one. If the scammer is going on and on about your grandchild suffering in a jail cell, you may end up sending him money for bail, even though logic would tell you that the entire situation is fake. In that case, the emotional response sought after by the scammer is one of fear and worry.
Scammers may also elicit positive responses, by telling you the details of a âfreeâ cruise youâve won, or by promising you a date with a beautiful Russian girl if you shell out thousands of dollars for a trip halfway around the world that turns out to be a scam. This tactic works extremely well, because people make quick decisions based on what they are feeling, without thinking.
Mind games: Fraudulent callers usually have little information about the people they call. However, they often have just enough to be able to persuade you to believe them. They generally know where you live, and can gather your gender and age just by talking to you. But after a little friendly chit-chat, they will know a lot more about you. Some callers are extremely friendly, and are able to gain a victimâs confidence. The scammers are able to glean important information out of them once they gain their trust, and persuade them to follow their instructions.
Donât fall for these tactics! Avoid answering these types of calls, and install a call-blocker on your phone so that they can never reach you. If you do answer, be aware that these scam tactics can work on just about anyoneâeven you!
