It's a sketch I probably won't finish because I had an idea for a poster for Angelfall but I don't think I'll ever get around to actually drawing it. Anyway very short Angelfall except beneath the cut
Angelfall, my current WIP, I've been worldbuilding and brainstorming for over a month now. This is being written for my Anna Morgan penname, which has a more commercial focus than my other pennames. Something in this business needs to be created for the market vs just for me, and that's what Anna's focus is.
Anna exclusively writes M/F dragon shifter paranormal romance/romantasy. That stretches only as far as menage or reverse harem/why choose, but there's always a central female character and an M/F relationship.
Queer characters get liberally sprinkled around in the supporting cast. It's still me writing it.
So this idea started with: I need a commercial project for anna
So I generally come at my stories/worlds with a specific structure in mind. A lot of people grab a character or cool central idea as their seed, but I tend to circle around from the outside for a while.
Anna writes dragon shifters in series
My other active project is 10 novellas and that's feeling like a lot let's drop this one to 8
Want to do a reverse harem because I'm in a harem kick. My other project is a gay harem. More characters more better.
I already have a written novella that I can use as the prequel for this series so that gives me a sketch of the world: modern day urban fantasy with vampires vs dragons.
The editor who contacted me for a series needs erotica so this is going to be a sex-is-power story, one of my favorite tropes. I need to come up with a plot reason for characters to get kinky.
I can't tell you where the idea for angels came from, but I was fiddling with the idea of metaphorical evil white and good black and angels being the traditional "good guys" were an easy target to twist. This isn't a Christian series though, the creatures are called angels because they glow white, they actually look like an alien attempted to recreate beetles in a lab after hearing a description of one third hand and they get more horrifying from there.
Ok cool, we have a useful tool for our vampire antagonists.
The best series have hierarchies layered into them. People lower on the pole that struggle against those above them. So I added some vampire ranks in their groups, I added some power stages for the dragon characters, I added some tiers of evil angel.
At this point I don't even have characters, which seems odd when I describe this process to other people but it's entirely normal for me. Characters come after I've got a world for them to live in.
Development from this point forward gets into character trope and plot outline but that's how it gets started. I build my worlds with the visual metaphors I want to include the hierarchy structures I need to establish tension and natural conflict or progression, and I start following some natural consequences of these initial decisions.
“History is filled with teenagers who lead the fight. Joan of Arc. Okita Soji, the samurai. Alexander the Great. They were all teenagers when they began leading their armies. I think we’re back to those times again, kid.”

“I am not afraid of you, your kind, or your god.”
Angelfall by Susan Ee
"I wonder how angels think of us, if they think of us at all."
— Susan Ee, Angelfall
"Her religious belief is fanatical. More accurately, her belief in the devil is fanatical. Me? Even now, with angels and all, I still can't believe in her God. Although I admit that late at night, I sort of fear her Devil."
— Susan Ee, Angelfall
