Dedicated to @calicogoat, I wrote this poem based on their recent post revealing some sad facts about their au, which have been living in my head since then. I hope ya like!
The door didn't open today.
The old clock on the wall keeps track,
With Ticks and Tocks
And Snapdragon-Snarks,
But never says anything back.
The door didn't open today.
He'll be cross if it gets overgrown.
So weed the garden,
Two, Five, and Seven.
He'll come home by the fields, alone.
If not the fields then the lane.
So mend the window,
Keeping watch through.
Just push down your shattered pane.
The door didn't open today.
The door didn't open today.
Harder and harder to keep the right time.
Dropping the rhythm and failing the rhyme.
Spirit is willing.
But as for the rest...
Like a pocket watch in a waistcoat
Wound too many times.
If only the clock on the wall could speak,
It would hold a decent conversation.
Of Dante or Virgil or perhaps de Cervantes.
But it just Ticks, without any Talks.
And Ticks
And Ticks
And
Springs and gears spilled out on the floor like a flood.
His hands, they sting.
Rivulets of regret
Running
Down.
Lemon juice
Is good for many more things
Than
Just
Tea.
Pay attention!
The door didn't open today.
The silence leaves claws in him.
And enough tears to drown in.
The clock had been his.
The door didn't open today.
