Headcanon that the reason why Calchus was king of Daunia when Odysseus was in Aeea but when Diomedes gets there the king is Daunus is that Calchus was so embarassed and humiliated for having been turned into a pig and having the Daunians come pick him up that he abdicated and exhiled himself to live in the woods

while people kinda like lessen circes character, crimes and personality, she does have more lighthearted morale moments like she is skeptical of medea cuz of the murder of Absyrtus or in one source I read, straight up cries over his death. But mainly her dealing with an annoying suitor Calchus, whom she turns into a pig for not leaving her alone, but still shows him mercy.
i mean she still killed like ten bazzilion people but its there.
The thought of Calchus going from Daunia all the way to the Tyrrhenian coast to Circe's island just to be turned into a pig is just. Why would he do this. While Odysseus was still there, mind you, surely his men were still waiting on the beach for Odysseus to finally sail, they could've warned him or something. He don't got Internet 😭 And the worst part is he kept coming and going to her island! This man is dumb as balls!
(On that note, it is interesting that Calchus doesn't actually seem to feast at Circe's palace until she gets fed up at him, which means up to that point they were meeting in some other context outside the palace? Idk what that would look like but it is interesting to think about)
Calchus makes the Daunians come all the way from the Ionian coast to beg Circe to turn him back into a human and take him back home. I'd be so embarassed on the way back man, definitely took a couple days too. That also makes me wonder what arguments the Daunians used to convince her, especially having in mind the Circe in the Odyssey, who Odysseus would not have convinced if not for moly and Hermes' advice
Odyssey adaptation where everything stays the same except Calchus shows up at Aeaea and you can faintly see him in the background of some scenes during the year Odysseus stays there: he comes in his boat to the coast multiple times, he gets transformed into a pig and then back to human, the Daunians come pick him up... Nothing else changes, the story resumes normally
