Candor Initiation: Week 3
The bus ride to the Merciless Mart settled his nerves since Brielle had been simply ecstatic. He had strung together a few illicit comments that he presumed she didnât understand since she just gave a roll of her eyes and tried to ignore him. He opted for sitting properly and waiting like any normal commuter, but after shifting in his seat for a while, he realized that bothering Brielle just seemed more fun. After all, he was too attractive for his own good, and he was in desperate need of entertainment. He tugged at her hair and poked at her cheeks, making sure to grab her undivided attention.
âSee, even your hair is as perky as you are. Did you even take a shower this morning? Itâs all frizzy and gross,â he smirked. âHo, ho, wouldnât that be something to tell everyone at Candor. âMiss Rhodes, did you take a shower this morning?ââ Jeremy said in a snooty voice. Clearing his throat, he did his best imitation of a more obnoxious Brielle. âNope.â Hair flip. ââIâm a pigâow!â  You know I bruise easily!â Jeremy howled, gingerly stroking his arm and scowling at Brielle.
âServes you right!â Brielle stuck out her tongue immaturely. To her surprise, Jeremy actually took it between his two fingers and tugged lightly. âMmmna!â She tried to say, slapping at his hand. The boy burst into fits of laughter as the bus halted with a soft swoosh. âSo this is how you can hold your tongue. This is not a bad way to go.â Brielle, slightly flushed, threw another punch at his other arm.
âOw! Jeez, woman. Youâre really aggressive. Are you sure youâre in the right faction?â Jeremy joked, releasing her tongue.
Since ignoring him didnât exactly work, she just sped up and slipped through the crowd to avoid him altogether. There went Jeremyâs only source of distraction. But really, what was he worried about? He didnât exactly have anything to hide, last he checked. He was pretty sure most of Candor knew about his thing for Victoria. As much as he hated to admit it, he looked like a lost puppy for a while after she transferred. Brielle got him through it; just like any good friend should.
There was no dramatic entrance for Jeremy, that day. This time, he was early as he took a seat in between Pierce and Grayson. Carson was stuck in class today while he got to go home. Ha! But he didnât have to go through the truth serum and spill out his guts. Damn. Donât get Jeremy wrong, he is fine doing this for the rest of his life. But after hearing scary stories from the graduates about having their guts spill out, it was only a matter of time before his lunch joined in on the fun. He didnât think he had any worthy stories. He was an open book; charming and extremely gorgeous. He would make it through this. He was Jeremy Sommers for crying out loud.
Brielle was only a few seats awayâavoiding his gaze. That wasnât very nice.
           âBrieeeeelle,â he whisper-shouted. âPssssst!â
           Nothing.
He chucked little thread balls at her from his shirt, making sure to get her ear. Exasperated, she twisted in her seat to face him.
           âWhat?!â
His eyes grew wide as he stuck out his lower lip. The puppy-dog pout. Next came his signature smolder. Finally, his best impression of a pedophile grin.
She held back her smile and looked away, doing her best to pay attention to his partner, Derek, as he poured out his regrets and terrible choices. Having him as a partner didnât really boost his confidence like a normal partner should, but it wasnât like he was completely terrible. He was nice, Stiff-like and really helpful. He just carried around a lot of baggage. Poor Mrs. Davidson wasnât expecting all that aggression. Being the first one, Derek didnât exactly give a good impression for the rest of them either, but to each his own and Jeremy swore to not make a scene. Crack a few jokes, maybe, but not cause a scene.
He whistled and snorted to get his mind from getting too psyched out, all the while distracting Brielle from the entire event until they called her name out. She gave him a warning look before settling herself on the chair. Normally you wouldnât able to see from high up on the bleachers, but he knew Brielle well enough to notice her flinch from the needle. No sooner than that was over, Mrs. Davidson started asking questions. He was definitely in for the shock of his life.
That thing about Jason, he knew about. It was pretty obvious when a girl seemed attracted to a bro, or any guy for that matter. Only⌠there isnât a sure way to know if a girl really likes you or simply bothers to spare you the time of day. It seemed cocky to presume that a person liked you, and if your assumption just happened to be wrong⌠it would definitely be something to tell the kids.
âI also think I may be developing feelings for my best friend, which is kinda not okayâŚâ
Did Brielle have another best friend? Declan was her best friend, right? (Speaking of Declan, he would have to talk to her about keeping his thoughts about transferring.) It wasnât like she was talking about himâshe didnât even say his name or anything. But somewhere at the back of his mind, he may have noticed a few signs that he disregarded as friendly gestures. They were friends. Was this going to change anything? No. Well⌠maybe? Yeah⌠she could be talking about Declan.
â⌠who left him behind for the same faction his best friend left him forâŚâ
Shit, she was talking about him. Maybe if they would just talk it outâoh no, sheâs coming this way. Abort! Abort! Abort the mission! Avoid eye contact, quick! Jeremy turned his head a few times, looking for something to do to seem casual because he hadnât been staringâno, gawkingâat her. Nope. He had been busy⌠talking to Pierce. He crossed his legs and leaned towards him, nodding as if he was in deep conversation with his seat mate. This made Pierce question his sanity as he gave him an odd look.
           Completely normal stuff.
           Jeremy Sommers.
           So much for normal.
He took the long way down, away from Brielleâs field of anything. He hoped against fate that all of Candor suddenly had Alzheimerâs and forgot that his best friend slipped out a tiny little detail that she kept from him. Well, two details to be exact. He wasnât entirely sure what to think of Declan or her at the moment. If only he could just clear his thoughts and get this over with. But they would probably question why he wouldnât be able to answer anything if there wasnât anything in his head. The little pinch from the needle distracted him for a moment before Mrs. Davidson gave him a reassuring smile.
âLet us begin. Jeremy Sommers, it has come to our attention that you are a terrible liar.â There was a small reaction from the audience. âThat isnât a problem here, however, we would just like to make sure that you arenât lying to yourself in any way. Contrary to the fact that you canât lie, there are certain things that most people would naturally delude themselves from. Today, we are going to rid you of these so that you may be able to clear your mind.â He hadnât been paying attention throughout most of the event, but he was pretty sure that he was the first to get a long introduction. It may have something to do with the long line of Candors in his family.
âIâm sure youâre now aware of the secrets your best friend, Brielle, has been keeping from you. How do feel about all of it?â
Why did Brielle have to go before him? Why didnât they go through the initiates in reverse-alphabetical order like they did during the Choosing Ceremony? He needed to think this over, but suddenly the words were forming on his lips before he even have time to process them.
âI donât know what to think. Do you ever get that feeling when youâre so sure about yourself that nothing will ever go wrong? I feel a little betrayed that she kept Declanâs thoughts of transferring a secret. Iâm pissed off that he didnât talk to me about it. I mean, Iâm his best friend. Weâve known each other since we were in diapers. I would have understood that Candor wasnât for him, but to tell someone we barely know instead of me? I feel like I donât know them anymore.â He breathed. Where did that come from?
Mrs. Davidson pursed her lips. âDo you think that these are somehow forgivable?â
âI donât know. I need time. I canâtâI want to talk to them about this. I just donât know how. Iâm not sure if I can ever trust them again.â That sounded harsh.
âHow do you feel about Declanâs transfer? I know it was a shock for most of us, but what was it like for you?â
âI always thought we would grow old together in black and white. Sure, all his sisters left him and everything, but Iâve always been there for him. I just thought he would return the favor⌠I canât blame him though. I really do want him to be happy, but I canât help but feel angry. Iâm only human. I want that friendship back, but Iâm afraid that when I do talk to him⌠it wonât be the same.â
The crowd was silent now. His pulse was on high speed like he had just ran a marathon. Jade made this look easy. Alex struggled a bit when he revealed his strong attraction for Reagan, but that turned out well after three years. Three years⌠would be have to wait that long to have some semblance of normalcy? He was afraid to trust now, or at least put his trust on anyone, for that matter. Why was this so hard? Did the aptitude test make mistakes? If it did, then maybe Candor just wasnât for him.
Mrs. Davidson cleared her throat. âI hope that your time here will reassure you that you can trust us all. Do you have anything else to share?â
           âI⌠Iâm afraid.â
âWe arenât Dauntless here, so Iâm sure youâre allowed to be. Would you care to elaborate?â
âI know weâre Candor, and I know we will all be honest with each other. But with honesty⌠will it always be like this? Will the truth hurt us to the point where we fear that maybe someone might be hiding a secret, but we presume that they tell the truth because theyâre Candor? That makes no senseâsorry. I mean, Iâm afraid to trust now. How do we know that everyone in this is really honest? We can find their tells, but we donât know what we donât know. They can lie by omission and break the rules.â
A commotion spread around the room. Some, appalled, some curious. It wasnât like his time was any worse than Derekâs.
âBut really... Iâm afraid I would go through my whole life taking this so seriously and be perpetually angry with herâBrielle. She is, no was, a great friend. And she thinks she had feelings for me. To be honest, that makes me feel really uncomfortable. Iâm so confused⌠Am I done yet?â
Mrs. Davidson looked at the crowdâat his faction. She took a deep breath and looked at him. âI suppose we are done here. Thank you for your honesty, Jeremy.â
A man came to help him out of his chair. The effects of the serum seemed to be wearing off, but he couldnât look at the other initiates again. He somehow made his way safely to his seat, sinking so low that his posterior was almost hanging off the edge. Three more guys and this would all be over. Brielle wasnât exactly sitting beside him, so he didnât have to worry about her. Thinking back to Derek, he felt bad for pitying him. The mere fact that he survived through the whole honesty session was commendable. They would have to revel in the silence together later.Â
