SHE’S TIRED, AND SHE KNOWS WENDY IS TOO. but they can’t stop, not now. she knows ( they both know ) that this is their only chance of´getting away from the orphanage and its tenants who took more than they gave. if they go back, they’ll be stuck in that little town, working in the fish factory, reduced to nothing more than the two poor orphans who tried to escape, but couldn’t. anya doesn’t want that not for herself, and certainly not for wendy. they both deserve better.
but she fights on, forcing tired legs to take one step more, then another, and then yet another. snow begins to descend around them, and anya instinctively pulls her coat tighter around her frail body. it’s been days since they last had a real meal, but she knows that just over the hill in front of them, there’s a dozen soup kitchens waiting for them.
❝ look wendy ! just a little further now ! ❞ her voice is laced with excitement, freezing body suddenly warm and overcome with joy. all the waiting, hard work and the long journey had been worth it. if only comrade phlegmenkoff could see them now !
