Day 1
10:00am
I’ve been here for a couple hours so I figured I might as well give an update! The senior employee meant to train me called out sick so my boss just told me pretend it was my last job and work the register. She didn’t seem to acknowledge my concerns when I told her my former job was at a restaurant but oh well.
It’s a slow day, thankfully, and I found some handbooks that explain my position. The odd part about them, however, was that they were produced 16 years ago in 1976, when Newport Station has only been open since 1983.
2:00pm
I had a customer ask about our fresh fruit policy and had to kindly explain that we do not sell fresh fruit. To be exact, we do not sell fruit of any level of freshness. He proceeded to point out a sticker on the back of the register that said “Ask About Our Fresh Fruit Policy.”
I removed the sticker and placed it with a note to ask my boss.
I apologized to the man for the miscommunication and explained that I was unaware of the sticker but he said it was not a problem and she told him something like this would happen. He then pulled an apple out of his pocket, sat it on the counter between us, and left without buying anything. Who was ‘She’?
4:00pm
My first shift is finally done! My boss came by to take over and said my register was correct so I could go home. Not much happened after my last update but I was able to ask about the fresh fruit policy sticker. My boss gave me an odd look and said that we never had a fresh fruit policy and when I went to show her the sticker, all I found was the sticky note that said “ask Gale.” I do not know any Gales.
