After IFFK we had one last private screening. It was in Kochi, the biggest city in Kerala, where Sheena was raised. The location was Cafe Papaya, an incredible coffee house, art gallery, restaurant, chill-out spot. Perfect for intimate film or music events. They also have recording studios and editing suites upstairs. And some great people. The place is owned by a great group of friends who are upcoming directors, DPs and artists, who are shaping the new regional cinema. India at times can feel like a time warp, where aspects of popular culture and societal norms feel like they're from a different era. But then you come across a place like Cafe Papaya and it's just as modern and forward thinking (if not more) than anyplace in the world. Maybe this simply comes down to the internet's influence on a new global culture or maybe there's always a bohemian avant-garde. Whatever the case, it's somewhat comforting to know that there are progressive sets in almost all places in the world. Our screening went over extremely well and best of all, it felt like we made a bunch of great new friends that we will always be able to hang with whenever we go back and visit home on that side of the planet.
