Spending time 'topside', as she'd heard it called, had been great. She'd spent probably hundreds of human lifetimes there over her lifetime, and it was really only in short increments if she was being honest. Each new lifetime was a new adventure that she'd been thinking about for a while. Humans lived such short lives, especially in comparison to a demon who was the child of the King and Queen of Hell. But Yaretzi enjoyed all she had learned from the humans in her time there, any time she went.
This time on Earth had been no different, really.
She started off as a barista in a coffee shop while she was 'going to school'. What that actually meant was that it was just her spending the time to forge the papers and documents she needed, before moving up in the world with a career and becoming a librarian this time. It was a quiet job, for the most part, which she enjoyed, but it was full of particular detail which she didn't always enjoy. The children's classes she read for had always been so cute, and she wished she remembered more of what she was like when she was that small. Thoughts for another day.
But now it was time for her to go back home for a while, pretend she was moving away to the few humans that had befriended her this time round. Time to spend a while with her family, and catch up on how things had been going back home, though she knew it shouldn't have been too different. She knew that home was still not the same as it was from before — missing siblings — and finding out who else was gone now. It ached in her chest, knowing that every day there were more that were gone. In a way, she also knew that she could be found out and hunted just like her siblings had been. It didn't deter her from going topside.
Yaretzi knew the risks, and it never outweighed the positive things that she thought of every time she decided to go, which was why she'd kept going. Something felt different this time around though. As she was preparing to go home, it felt like she was being watched, much more than usual. She could never place where the feeling came from, either, which is likely what bothered her most. Sometimes she was able to shrug it off like it was nothing, and other times it was a constant feeling. Sometimes she felt paranoid about it. Maybe she should have heeded the warnings from her parents and her siblings.
Much like her siblings, she didn't go far from home without a weapon that was forged in Hell, especially given the eerie feelings she'd been having lately. She'd rather be safe than sorry. And it seemed it was good that she did. Today, walking back to her rented apartment, she was ambushed, but not by any human. Oh no, of course not. Today it was an angel, who was looking for blood. She didn't even hear what the angel had said before they attacked her.
Hitting the ground, she groaned, and immediately rolled them over, using whatever leverage she could get from the ground. She may have been small, but she was feisty and quick. Her hands started throwing punches, and the odd scratch when that wasn't working. She rolled off, away from them to get a better chance of surviving.
Her blades came out the second she had the opportunity, and got a good swipe at their arm when they lunged at her, causing a hell of a gnarly gash, which made the angel back off, and try to come up with a new plan. Their sparring went back and forth a little, though neither of them could get the upper hand yet. Yaretzi held her own against the angel, even if she wasn't as well versed in combat like Mazikeen would have been.
Then a celestial weapon came out - a dagger - so the fight was even again on that level, and whichever damned angel this was got the upper hand when they deeked one of her attacks, and slashed at her chest. She let out a pained hiss, the sensation of the celestial power burning at her being. It was bad.
Yar dropped to her knees, trying to brandish her knives enough to get a moment, and some space between them. That was all she needed - a moment. A quick prayer to her parents, hoping that they'd get it fast enough to be able to help. Damn it, she didn't just want to be another child that Lilith lost!
'Mother, Father, if you can hear me, please come to me now!'
She screamed at the angel, in pain and anger, before she forced herself back to her feet even though the burning was intense and almost blinding. She launched herself at them, burying one of her blades deep in their chest, both of them crumbling to the ground, and Yaretzi rolling a short distance away, listening to the angel choke and sputter, unable to pull Yaretzi's blade from their chest.
She was in an immense amount of pain, and it felt like she was burning up into oblivion. The last thing she remembered seeing was the hem of her mother's gown before her eyes closed, tears streaming from her eyes onto the pavement below her cheek, thankful that her prayer was heard so clearly.
