CACCAMO - CHIESA DI SAN BENEDETTO ALLA BADIA
La bellezza dell’imperfezione - Per descrivere la chiesa di San Benedetto alla Badia di Caccamo occorrerebbero alcune ore. Ora , visto che al giorno d’oggi le parole sono sostituite dagli emoticon, nessuno avrebbe la pazienza di leggermi. Per questo motivo concentro quanto voglio dire su un particolare per me importante. Descriviamo prima la chiesa: la solita chiesa di suore di clausura realizzata a Caccamo vicino al vecchio castello dopo che per secoli le suore, che avevano il convento fuori dalla città , erano state vessate da pirati ed angioini. La prima imperfezione, al solito, è che è una bellissima chiesa per le suore in cui le suore non entravano mai. Le suore infatti seguivano le funzioni da luoghi appartati e separati dal corpo della chiesa e vi entravano solo da morte in quanto il cancello di ferro del pavimento era la porta che portava alla cripta in cui erano seppellite. Seconda imperfezione: gli stucchi bellissimi che sembrano di Serpotta il grande artista barocco. C’è anche la sua firma: la lucertola con il corpo a forma di S. Invece gli stucchi sono del suo discepolo Bartolomeo che in suo onore firmò la sua opera con la lucertola del suo maestro a eterna ammirazione. Altra imperfezione: il pavimento di maiolica della chiesa! La maiolica, è un materiale vivo, non immortale ne imperituro. Qua e la si vedono gli effetti dell’uso e in certi angoli il calpestio dei fedeli ha cancellato i colori mettendo a nudo il corpo in ceramica. Eppure la bellezza del pavimento toglie il respiro. I colori, assolutamente siciliani, illuminano la chiesa, i disegni raccontano di vascelli nella tempesta a rappresentare forse la chiesa o la virtù delle monache sempre scossa e provata dalla scelta di fede. Una volta solo i palazzi principeschi avevano simili pavimenti e con il passare del tempo furono sostituiti da altri a causa dell’usura. Qui invece il pavimento originale illumina la chiesa, la domina, la riscalda e la rende nobile donando un allegria serena ed elegante. Il pavimento si vede bene dall’alto, dalla grata dietro cui le suore seguono le funzione e che permette loro di avere una panoramica completa della chiesa. Ecco la grata, un arabesco di ferro battuto in cui ogni ricciolo di ferro è diverso dall’altro, ha un diverso spessore e una forma sua mai uguale a quella del ricciolo vicino. Una moderna macchina a controllo numerico avrebbe potuta fare tutti i riccioli uguali l’uno all’altro, perfettamente identici ed tecnicamente con lo stesso spessore e peso. Eppure nella grata è proprio la diversità degli elementi che la rendono bellissima, che disorientano i nostri occhi abituati alla perfezione meccanica e non più all'imperfezione umana che crea i capolavori. La chiesa di San Benedetto è proprio questo: la bellezza della nostra imperfezione che eppure crea armonia e bellezza e quindi alla fine emozione. Dimenticavo, se entrate in chiesa vi chiederanno di togliervi le scarpe per salvaguardare il pavimento; per favore fatelo per rispettarne la sua bellezza e l’unicità .
The beauty of imperfection - It would take a few hours to describe the church of San Benedetto alla Badia di Caccamo. Now, since nowadays words are replaced by emoticons, nobody would have the patience to read me. For this reason I concentrate on what I want to say about a detail that is important to me. Let us first describe the church: the usual church of cloistered nuns built in Caccamo near the old castle after the nuns, who had a convent outside the city, had been oppressed by pirates and Angevins for centuries. The first imperfection, as usual, is that it is a beautiful church for the nuns in which the nuns never entered. The nuns in fact followed the functions from secluded places and separated from the body of the church and entered only from death since the iron gate of the floor was the door that led to the crypt in which they were buried. Second imperfection: the beautiful stuccos that seem to be the great Baroque artist of Serpotta. There is also his signature: the lizard with the body in the shape of S. Instead the stuccos are by his disciple Bartholomew who in his honor signed his work with the lizard of his master to eternal admiration. Another imperfection: the tiled floor of the church! Majolica is a living material, not immortal or imperishable. Here and there you can see the effects of use and in certain corners the trampling of the faithful has erased the colors, exposing the ceramic body. Yet the beauty of the floor takes your breath away. The colors, absolutely Sicilian, illuminate the church, the drawings tell of ships in the storm to represent perhaps the church or the virtue of the nuns always shaken and tried by the choice of faith. Once only the princely palaces had similar floors and with the passage of time were replaced by others due to wear. Here instead the original floor illuminates the church, dominates it, heats it and makes it noble, giving a serene and elegant joy. The floor is clearly visible from above, from the grate behind which the nuns follow the function and which allows them to have a complete overview of the church. Here is the grating, a wrought iron arabesque in which each curl of iron is different from the other, has a different thickness and a shape that is never equal to that of the nearby curl. A modern numerical control machine could have made all the curls equal to each other, perfectly identical and technically with the same thickness and weight. And yet in the grille it is precisely the diversity of the elements that make it beautiful, which disorient our eyes accustomed to mechanical perfection and no longer to the human imperfection that creates masterpieces. The church of San Benedetto is precisely this: the beauty of our imperfection that yet creates harmony and beauty and therefore in the end emotion. I forgot, if you enter the church they will ask you to take off your shoes to protect the floor; please do it to respect its beauty and uniqueness.
