#cabbage patch pony

I found this Cabbage Patch Magic Meadow Pony Glitz n Glamour Beauty *inhale* at Goodwill.

I do find it funny that the at-the-time biggest competitor to My Little Pony was these weird, hippo-looking Cabbage Patch ponies, and both lines were Hasbro anyway.

I’m forty now, and I remember getting a couple of those when I was a kid. The people who are whining about kids getting “participation trophies” now were almost always the same generation that decided to give them out in the first place. I always thought that the wank was a really funny way to say “Man, we were shitty authority figures, huh?” But the really funny thing is that I don’t remember a single kid who actually cared about them. No one was jonesing for those participation ribbons. We either wanted to do whatever activity was on deck because it was FUN or we were doing it against our will because it was BORING (or TOO DAMN HOT) and the junk they gave us afterwards was irrelevant.

Except, I liked them. I did. Because I was a die-hard Horse Girl. I had about 20 plastic ponies of various shapes and sizes (with various amounts of glitter) and those participation awards were fantastic for playing Horse Show because they looked so much cooler than the crap ones I always cut out of construction paper (and Mom wouldn’t let me use my ACTUAL blue ribbons from winning 1st place in the library’s Illustrate A Book contest like three years in a row because they were too fancy to tape to a Cabbage Patch Pony’s head.)

So, Boomers and Co, thanks for the participation awards! They were fun.

This pony has a hugely inflated ego now, though.
