A nervous man quietly enters the council chambers, holding his offering in trembling hands. The walk to the stand is long, and his footsteps echo in the cavernous chamber. Darkness surrounds him, the only lights being those illuminating the hooded figures high above him on their towering podiums. After what seems like an eternity, he finally reaches the stand. A voice booms down from the council seats.
âSPEAK.â
âMy, uh, my- my claim is-â He turns the parchment in his hands towards the council. âIt- itâs âBig Blue,â because y-you see, my truck, itâs very big and, uh- itâs also blue, so I, you know, thought it would be... you know...â His voice trailed off into a mumble. His heart was pounding, and every muscle tensed.
For an agonizing moment, all he can hear is the hushed deliberation of the council above him, murmuring between each other. All at once, the room returns to silence, before one of them spoke again.
âBLUE. GANG REFERENCE?â
âNo! I swear, I didnât mean-â he was cut off by a softer voice from the council.
âThe car is blue...â
The words echoed in the chamber as the rest of the council turned to look at the one who spoke up. for just a moment, silence hung in the air between them, when at last the head of the council delivered his verdict.
âACCEPTED.â
A sudden light shone through the exit door, beckoning him out. It would be several minutes before his heart stopped pounding, but it didnât matter. He did it. He faced his judgement and emerged victorious with his license plate. As he exited the chamber, he couldnât help but sneak a look at the next judgement taking place.
âMy claim is âOG SWAGâ because I thought-â
The entire council spoke as one. Their voices shook the room.
âOG. GANG REFERENCE.â
âWait, no, you canât- Please!â
The lights in the chamber went out, and the room was engulfed in darkness. When they turned back on, there was no sign of the man who had just stood before them.
