Regulus has never understood the allure of James Potter--Allure because it wasāt just Sirius Black who got so incredibly interested in the egotistical tosspot. Though, to be most fair would be to admit that part of Regulusā dislike stems from a childish jealousy she clings to this day. What does James have that I donāt. Answer: the ability to speak coherently, a distinct lack of bigotry, probably has only murdered outside of battle recently... the list goes on. Still, Regulus has often wondered how she might manage to mimic such a personality for herself. So far all attempts (the few that there have been) have been a failure.
Regulus offered to take Food down to James while he was in captivity. Regulusā standing was not so low that it would be a typical task (she was in Voldemortās inner circle initially, after all) but she also wasnāt watched so intently that anyone questioned it. While no one would say she was niceĀ her attempts to keep her own anxiety and compulsions under control meant that James did get more food when she was the one bringing it.
The decision to use James as a failsafe was last minute and full of panic. The information shared was predominately about the horcrux she knew about and charmed to release upon her death. Fortunately, or unfortunately, she did die... but didnāt stay that way. Now, the charm has released at leas a partial memory and will eventually fail. Regulus currently doesnāt know that or else, honestly, she might consider killing him.
Regulus thought James would have escaped or been rescued by the start of the game--certainly. The fact that she emerged from the cave and he wasnāt out of Death Eater control was a surprise--she hasnāt exactly done anything herself to change that, though. Why should she off herself for her brotherās best friend?
